Two dead, one wounded in real estate office shooting

SAN ANTONIO -- A man on Wednesday walked into the real estate office where he worked and fatally shot two women and critically wounded another, authorities said.

The shooter later killed himself while he was driving a sport utility vehicle being chased by police near Temple, about 135 miles northeast of San Antonio, officials said.

"He walked in, approached these three employees, shot them, then ran," said San Antonio police Sgt. Gabe Trevino.

He said those killed were shot multiple times.

The injured woman, 41-year-old Jane Swanson, was taken by helicopter to University Hospital with a single gunshot wound.

"She's very critical," said Leni Kirkman, a hospital spokeswoman.

The suspect, who wasn't immediately identified, fled police in a black Ford Explorer. As officers tailing him on Interstate 35 closed in, the vehicle struck a barrier, crossed the median and halted in a cornfield. The man shot himself in the head, police said.

"The license plate matches the vehicle that we were looking for," Trevino said. "The description of the suspect also matches the description of the suspect we were looking for."

He said all those involved worked at a Century 21 real estate office in northeast San Antonio near I-35.

Police identified those killed as Anna Medcalf, 40, and Nancy Scharein, 61, both of San Antonio.
