Jackson library story times held Wednesdays

Story times for preschool children, ages 3 to 5, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesdays at Jackson Public Library, 100 N. Missouri St., third floor. Fun stories, a craft and snack are on the agenda. Call Christy Scott at 243-5150 for more information.

Kelly kindergarten meeting for parents

A kindergarten orientation/ school tour for parents and children will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the elementary gym. Parents attending this meeting will have the first chance to schedule an appointment for kindergarten screening from 8:15 to 3 p.m. March 20 or 21. Children must be 5 years old before Aug. 1 to be eligible for 2006 to 2007 attendance. Screening will take about one to two hours. Parents unable to attend the Tuesday meeting may call 545-3544 beginning Wednesday to schedule an appointment. Mandatory at the time of screening/enrollment are a certified copy of the child's birth certificate (obtainable at the county health department if the child was born in Missouri), an up-to-date immunization record and the child's Social Security number.

Walk America kickoff Thursday at Outback

The March of Dimes 2006 Walk America kickoff is slated for noon Thursday at the Outback Steakhouse.

Travelers Post M to hold annual meeting Friday

The Cape Girardeau Post M of the Travelers Protective Association will hold its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Friday. Changes to the post's bylaws will be considered, and an election of new officers will be held. Members should note the date change from Saturday. A free meal will be served to members. Members may bring a guest, and a cash bar will be available. Missouri division secretary Betty Cady and her husband, Joe, plan to attend. Call Juanita Henley at 335-9308 for more information.

Pageant to benefit Central cheerleaders

Registration begins at noon Saturday at Jefferson Elementary School for the City of Roses pageant. Start time is 1 p.m. Boys and girls of all ages are invited to participate in this fund-raising pageant with all proceeds to benefit the Central High School cheerleaders who are developing a co-ed team. Gym time, seminars and uniforms are some of the needs the pageant will fund.

Relay for Life dinner, auction and dance set

All proceeds from a dinner, auction and dance held from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Leopold Knights of Columbus Hall will benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and assorted desserts will be served. A dance with music by the River City Sound System will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. with a small auction beginning at 8:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by St. Isidore Council 5898.

Pizza night supports American Cancer Society

A portion of the proceeds from Pizza Inn night held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 13 at the Fruitland Pizza Inn will benefit the Fruitland 4-H Relay for Life Team. The team is raising funds for the upcoming American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

Scott Co. plans tornado drill for March 14

The Scott County Emergency Management Agency and Scott County Citizens Corps Council want to remind residents of a statewide tornado drill at 1:30 p.m. March 14. The drill will last approximately 15 minutes. If Missouri is experiencing severe weather conditions, the National Weather Service will hold the drill on the backup date, March 16. Tornado watch means watch the sky. Tornado warning means seek shelter immediately. Deadline for Community Caring Conference set

The 17th annual Community Caring Conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 at Southeast Missouri State University's Glenn Auditorium. Registration deadline is March 15 and may be accomplished online at www.communitycaringcouncil.org/40Assets. The registration fee includes lunch. The agenda includes composite survey results from Cape and Jackson Schools and break-out sessions including youth serving and faith-based organizations, parents/caregivers/neighbors/mentor, youth, business and civic leaders, law enforcement, media and schools.

Training date changed at Scott County center

The date and time for the program "Railway Hazards and Disaster Planning," presented by John Miller with the Union Pacific Railroad, has been changed to 6 to 9 p.m. March 16 at Scott County EMA Training Center, 22842 U.S. 61 Oran, Mo. The event is open to all local first responder agencies and Community Emergency Response Team members. Those planning to attend should contact Scott County EMA to confirm their attendance at (573) 545-9113. Class size is limited, so call early.

Kindergarten screening date announced in Delta

Delta Elementary will hold its kindergarten screening Wednesday and March 22 and 23 for children who will be 5 years old by July 31. Call the school at (573) 794-2440 for an appointment. A kindergarten readiness meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 4.

Scott City PTO plans dinner auction in April

A fund-raising auction for the Scott City PTO will take place April 8 with a 5 p.m. viewing of auction items, followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. auction at Schock's Rental Hall, 116 E. Hickory St., Scott City. Discounted tickets for couples; must be at least 21 years of age to attend. For tickets, call (573) 264-2787.

Nell Holcomb sets kindergarten screening

Call the school at 334-3644 for an appointment on April 20 to enroll your child for kindergarten. Eligible children must be 5 years old before Aug. 1. A copy of the child's immunization record, official birth certificate and Social Security card must be presented at the time of enrollment. Immunizations must be up to date before children attend classes. Screenings will also be done for ages 3 and 4. Appointments are necessary.
