Delta boys stay alive in thriller

Delta used a second-half comeback and a 3-pointer in the last second to pull off a mild upset of Leopold, winning 66-64 in the first round of the Class 1 District 2 boys basketball tournament Monday at Oak Ridge.

Fourth-seeded Leopold led 32-23 at halftime, but No. 5 Delta (8-17) came out with a 30-18 advantage in the third quarter. Terrence Below drained a 3 with less than a second remaining to give the Bobcats the victory.

Below led all scorers with 29 points, and Delta's Aaron Kinder added 14.

Victor Vandeven led Leopold (8-15) with 18 points, followed by Eric Fluchel with 13, Matt Stoverink with 12 and Eric Seiler with 11.

Delta will take on top-seeded Bell City tonight at 6 p.m. in the semifinal round, followed by a Saxony Lutheran-Oran matchup at 7:30.

Bell City outscored No. 8 Marquand 61-11 in the first half and cruised into the semifinals with a 94-34 victory.

Nick Niemczyk and Will Bogan threw in 22 points apiece for the Cubs (23-4), and Garrett McIntyre added 12.

Second-seeded Saxony Lutheran led by just two points at the half but used a 23-11 advantage in the third quarter to hold off No. 7 Oak Ridge 64-50.

The Crusaders (21-5) were led by Lauren Lueders' 17 points. Alex Jauch added 16, Tim Lorenz netted 13 and Casey Petzoldt chipped in 11.

Austin Hahs led all scorers with 25 points for Oak Ridge (3-19), and Johnnie Price scored 15.

Third-seeded Oran (11-13) defeated No. 6 Zalma 64-56.

The two teams combined for a 26 for 57 performance from the free throw line, including 18 of 37 for Oran.

Kody Campbell scored a game-high 19 points for the Eagles, and Chase Seyer added 12.

Josh Barrett led Zalma with 13 points, followed by Tim Landing with 11 and Daniel Schrader with 10.

The Indians (10-14) will take on top-seeded Viburnum at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal round.

Eric Clements and Waylon Richardet both checked in with double-doubles for St. Vincent. Clements scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds, while Richardet netted 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Third-seeded Woodland opened district play at Greenville by routing sixth-seeded Charleston.

Woodland plays second-seeded Greenville at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.

SLMCSAA All-star games

New Salem Baptist Academy of Marble Hill and Eagle Ridge joined People's Christian to split a pair of basketball games in the St. Louis Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association All-star event at Gateway Christian in St. Louis.

The girls squad, which consisted of three players from New Salem and four from Eagle Ridge, rolled over the North all-star team 62-48.

Sarah Green of New Salem scored 20 points for the South team.

Green joined Eagle Ridge's Kristen Margrabe on the all-conference first team, while Kacie Seabaugh of Eagle Ridge was named to the second team.

The local boys all-star squad received a 106-66 pounding from the North team.

Joel Price of Eagle Ridge, who was named to the all-conference second team with New Salem's Brett Jones, netted 16 points. Jeremy Rockhill of New Salem was named to the first team.
