Out of tragedy, a little good news

To the editor:

Regarding the break in the Taum Sauk reservoir: It would almost be humorous, if not for the people injured and damage to property. It seems AmerenUE was not paying attention and overflowed its 1.5 billion-gallon bathtub. I try and keep an eye on mine.

My son called from Kansas. We made Fox News and CNN. There were live pictures from the scene, experts on hand, the whole ball of wax. By late morning there was no more information, so he called home. It would appear that once the missing persons were found and no one died interest in the story died.

It would appear that KFVS12 got closest to the real story. A mother was found in the wreckage of her house by rescue workers. Sitting in water and debris and freezing, she had one child in one arm and a baby in the other. She knew what mattered and held on for dear life. A third child was found several feet away caught in debris. A fireman heard the child's cry. If that doesn't make you believe in God, nothing will.

What we want from the news media is just like in the Anne Murray song: "A Little Good News." Just because it bleeds, it doesn't have to lead.
