Salvation Army serves meals this week
The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope, will be serving Meals With Friends from today through Friday. Serving time is 4:30 to 6 p.m. Any individual is welcome to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal in a cool, friendly atmosphere at no cost.
The menus are:
Monday: Taco or taco salad, tortilla chips, salsa, refried beans, cake or pie.
Tuesday: Beef ravioli, lettuce salad, applesauce, bread and butter, cake or pie.
Wednesday: Chicken tenders, french fries, cole slaw, rolls and butter, cake or pie.
Thursday: Goulash, buttered corn, fruit salad, bread and butter, cake or pie.
Friday: Chili dog on bun, potato chips, green beans, peaches, cake or pie.
Car club to hold show at July 4 celebration
Capaha Antique Car Club and the Jackson Jaycees will hold a car, truck and motorcycle show at the Jackson City Park July 4 celebration. Take Interstate 55 to Jackson-Fruitland exit. Go right on U.S. 61, Jackson City Park three miles on right. The show will be held rain or shine.
New to the show this year are a separate class for motorycles, the addition of a Freedom Plaque and bigger trophies. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the south and north gates; judging starts at 11 a.m.; trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. Dash plaques for the first 125 entries and a 50/50 drawing will be featured.

75th anniversary bridge pageant set for October
Girls are invited to participate in the 75th anniversary pageant of the Mississippi River bridge held Oct. 17 and 18 at Southeast Missouri State University Academic Auditorium. Four categories will include titles for 5- to 19-year-olds. Contestants will compete in interview, gown, talent or costume and on-stage question.
Winners will receive crowns, sashes, trophies and many gifts. The queens will be ambassadors at the grand opening ceremonies of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge and meet with U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson.

Christian Women's Club to meet on July 14
"Brighten Your Corner" is the theme of the next Christian Women's Club meeting to begin at noon July 14 at the Holiday Inn in Cape Girardeau. Luncheon and day-care reservations may be made by calling Bonnie Macke at 243-2866 by July 10.
The speaker, Karen Ethridge, will deliver a presentation on how light bulbs and doorknobs helped her escape the dark places in her life. A special feature will include "Bright Ideas" by the Sewing Basket and music by Grace Parry.
Genealogical society meets Tuesday night
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. This informal meeting will be a time of research with no business meeting or formal program presented. Visitors are invited to bring their questions and work with more experienced genealogists. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings.

AARP seeks volunteers to hep with income taxes
AARP Tax-Aide, the nation's largest, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, is looking for volunteers to help taxpayers complete their federal and state income tax forms in 2004. This is a free community service program sponsored by AARP in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
In November, new volunteers will receive free training from AARP Tax-Aide, in cooperation with the IRS. In addition to Federal and Missouri income tax returns, the volunteers assist eligible seniors file for Property Tax Credit (often referred to as Circuit Breaker). They will then be asked to serve at least four hours per week from Feb. 1 through April 15, 2004, at one of the many preparation locations. Expense reimbursement is provided for program-related, out-of-pocket expenses.

Matt Blunt to present library grant in Jackson
Secretary of State Matt Blunt will be at the Jackson branch of Riverside Regional Library, 204 S. Union St., at 10:30 a.m. Friday to present the library with a grant award of $5,200 to be used to purchase TTY telephones for the Jackson and Perryville, Mo., branches. These will be installed so hearing-impaired people can communicate with library staff from their homes.
Four adjustable tables for the library branches at Oran, Scott City, Perryville and Central will also be purchased to accomodate wheel-bound patrons.
The public is invited to attend the presentation. Officials from the Missouri State Library, local state legislators, county commissioners, library board members and friends of the library are also invited to attend.
Parents group to go to dance classes
Parents Without Partners will attend Line Dance Lessons at Circle S Saddle from 7 to 9 p.m Wednesday.
Baker family reunion to be held July 4 and 5
The Baker family reunion will be held beginning at 6 p.m. July 4 at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau and from 11 a.m. to dusk July 5 at Cape County Park North. Food and drinks will be provided at the park.

Relay for Life team offers waitress service
The Drury Southwest Signs Relay For Life team will provide volunteer waitresses at the Pizza Inn Cruise Inn (across from West Park Mall) from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. All tips go to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
