Local churches offer Halloween alternatives

* Centenary United Methodist Church will hold a trunk or treat event from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

* Westside Church of God will hold a combination neighborhood night/trunk or treat event from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. A family dinner will be served and there will also be games. The church is at 2222 Bloomfield Road in Cape Girardeau. For more information, call 335-2124.

* First Baptist Church at 212 High St. in Jackson will hold a trunk or treat event at 6 p.m. Oct. 31.

* Fruitland Community Church will hold a fall festival Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be games and food served.

* Grace United Methodist Church will hold a trunk or treat event from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

* Whitewater United Methodist Church in Whitewater will hold a fall festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29.

First Christian Church holds blood drive Monday

First Christian Church in Cape Girardeau will hold a blood drive with the American Red Cross from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31. The church is at 20 S. Mount Auburn Road.

Ecumenical Reformation service at St. Mark

St. Mark Lutheran Church at 1900 LaCroix Road will hold an Ecumenical Reformation Service at 2 p.m. Oct. 30. The service will feature a fictional historical dialogue between Martin Luther and Hans Gutenberg. Martin Luther, Time Magazine's Third Most Influential Person of the Last Millennium, will be played by Brother David Migliorino from Notre Dame Regional High School. Hans Gutenberg, fictional brother of Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of the western movable type system printing press, will be played by Dr. Mark Langenfeld.

St. Vincent will feature ugly quilts next weekend

St. Vincent de Paul Christian Service is sponsoring an Ugly Quilt weekend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 and 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 30. Participants will make sleeping bags for the homeless.

Diocese awards Eftink with recognition award

Doris Eftink of Oran, Mo., recently received the 2005 Citizen Recognition Award from the Springfield/Cape Girardeau Catholic Diocese during the annual Catholic conference in Jefferson City.

Church of God holds spiritual emphasis event

First Church of God at 500 Emerald St. in Cape Girardeau will hold a spiritual emphasis weekend Friday through Oct. 30. There will be a guest speaker, drama and special music.
