University, First Baptist make a good deal

Southeast Missouri State University's recent $3.5 million purchase of the First Baptist Church property on Broadway is a good move for both parties.

The church has been spending money on more space than it needed, which has been a financial drain. Smaller facilities are expected free up money to finance mission projects.

Meanwhile, the university got a really good value.

Now it can expand its campus to the south with the use of the church's activity center, the education building and sorely needed parking.

When the church leaves its Broadway facilities at the end of 2005, the main building will house the university's alumni and fund-raising offices and athletics department marketing staff. Thus, the university won't have to build special facilities for these purposes.

It seems like a good deal for everybody.
