Loving homes for hurricane dogs

To the editor:

I was touched by the story "Every Penny counts" as I have been with all the stories regarding Hurricane Katrina. As a devout animal lover, I am saddened by the numerous pets that were left homeless in the aftermath and worry about their fate. These animals have proven they are survivors. My concern is that after everything these pets have been through to survive, they face the possibility of being destroyed if they are not adopted. According to Cheryl Dillon of the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, "these dogs will probably be kept longer because they have been through so much." I feel these dogs should be kept until they find homes. How sad to think these dogs fought so hard to survive the worst natural disaster in U.S. history only to be euthanized for not being adopted quickly. I hope the humane society and our community can find a way to care for these until they can be placed in loving homes.
