Cape Tigers stand at 4-2 in Cooperstown tourney

The Cape Girardeau Tigers 12-and-under baseball team opened play at the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, N.Y., by winning four of its first six games.

The Tigers will complete pool play this morning in the 80-team tournament. Elimination bracket games begin this afternoon and the tournament concludes Thursday.

The Tigers opened Sunday with a 5-4 win against the Westfield, N.J., Blue Dawgs. Starting pitcher Eric Hayes had two hits and two RBis and drove in the winning run. Austin Davis picked up the pitching win in relief and stole three bases.

Later that day, the Tigers beat the Lone Peak Knights of Alpine, Utah, 3-1 on Andrew Williams' complete game. Williams struck out eight and allowed two hits.

The Tigers improved to 3-0 by beating the Lafayette, Ind., Storm 9-4 on Monday. Brett Thomas was the winning pitcher. Christian Cavaness hit a home run, while Hayes and Tyler Buelow each had two hits.

The Tigers lost 3-1 later Monday to the Arvada West Wildcats from Colorado. Williams' home run was the team's only run.

Cape Girardeau bounced back Tuesday to beat the Glenview, Ill., Blaze 9-8. Caveness was the winning pitcher, and Davis picked up the save. Davis also had three hits and stole two bases. Jonathan Lynch had two hits and two RBIs.

The Tigers lost later in the day to the Lake Shore Graysox of Maryland.
