Cottonwood recognizes employee of the year

Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center recognized the Employee of the Year for 2003 during the annual Employee Relations Day held at the center on May 16.

Sharon McDowell of Cape Girardeau was selected for the award by co-workers, who cited her professionalism and skills in working with others. McDowell began her career at Cottonwood in 1999 as a direct care staff member and is currently children's psychiatric care supervisor.

Cottonwood is on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University and is a Department of Mental Health facility that provides residential treatment services for youth ages 6 to 17 who have emotional and behavioral problems.

Organizer goes to national conference

Local professional organizer Ann Swanson of Clean Up Your Act recently attended the 2003 annual conference and organizing expo of the National Association of Professional Organizers in Denver, Colo. Swanson's new organizing service operates in conjunction with Maid Solutions of Jackson.

Swanson was one of more than 400 delegates to the conference, which enhances the continuing education and professional standing of organizers from around the world.

Clean Up Your Act is a residential organizing service.

Counselors present program at NCEA

Brenda Schmidt and Michelle Riehn, both licensed professional counselors at Lighthouse Counseling Services in Perryville, Mo., presented a program recently during the National Catholic Education Association annual convention at the America's Center in St. Louis.

An estimated 325 Catholic elementary and secondary educators and administrators attended the program titled "Classroom management for children with behavioral issues."

The NCEA was organized in 1902 and represents 200,000 educators.

Bone graduates from law enforcement academy

Cape Girardeau native Carl Bone recently graduated from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson City, Mo. He was been assigned to Ste. Genevieve and Perry counties in Troop C.

Bone is a 1996 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Southeast Missouri State University in 2000.
