New Jackson police chief is quickly tested

James Humphreys is considered by a lot of his peers to be a good choice to be Jackson's new police chief.

He has been described as having a cool demeanor, a professional attitude and good qualifications. Those qualities certainly have been tested in his first days as chief, thanks to the tornado that struck Jackson shortly after Humphreys took over the department's top administrative post.

Humphreys, who was promoted from within the department, seems like just the man to help the department move on from a sour chapter. The former police chief resigned after a sexual misconduct investigation.

Humphreys acknowledges that morale has been down at the department. His strong leadership should help alleviate that. He also wants the department to become more involved in the community. Those are fine goals.

Those who selected Humphreys said that he stood out during the interview process. Among other impressive accomplishments, Humphreys graduated from the FBI National Academy, becoming the first Jackson officer to have been accepted into the academy.

Humphreys said that Jackson deserves the best. It appears they may have it.
