Missouri Retired Teachers
Missouri Retired Teachers met May 7 at Chateau Girardeau.
Carol Robert from the Southeast Missourian explained the "We Need Your Photos" project for the "Cape Girardeau Faces & Places" book to be published.
Also, Carla Glaus from Southeast Missouri Hospital presented a program on diabetes. She explained the impact of the disease and explained management and treatment.
New officers were elected for 2003-2004: Gene Loftis, president; Doris Ford, vice president; Mary Urhahn, secretary; and Evelyn McClintock, treasurer.
A luncheon will be held following the next meeting on June 4 at Chateau Girardeau. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. with lunch served at 11 a.m.
Jane Clark was hostess for the May 8 meeting of Kage FCE Club. Inez Statler presided.
Clark presented the devotional which pertained to Mother's Day.
A report on the May 2 Southeast District FCE meeting at Poplar Bluff stated that 15 members from Cape Girardeau County were in attendance.
Statler announced that two first-place state FCE awards were received, as well as a third place.
Cape Girardeau Country FCE Clubs will sponsor the June 25 Red Cross blood drive at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
Clark gave the program on "How Good is Your Balance?" She pointed out that risk of falling increases at about age 35.
Margaret Crites will be the hostess of the next meeting on June 12. The program on hormone replacement therapy will be given by Barbara Schaffner.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary met May 8 at Post 3838 with Debbie Griffin presiding.
Three new members were installed: Agnes Liley, Sharon Polito and Ashley Moore. Officers were installed for the ensuing year and committee reports were read.
Members were reminded to fly their flags on Flag Day, June 14, and that items for the cancer booth at the convention to be held June 27 through 29 may be left at the post.
Carol Robert from the Southeast Missourian spoke on the book "Cape Girardeau Faces & Places" being published by the Southeast Missourian. The Ladies Auxiliary will purchase a book to be presented to the Missouri Veterans Home.
Vernice Baumstark presented 50 etiquette pamphlets to St. Mary Cathedral School and had an Americanism Color Contest held on Loyalty Day.
Buddy Poppy Days will be May 23 and 24. Help is needed.
The next steak night will be June 7. Members are encouraged to donate their time.
The district meeting will be held in Poplar Bluff on Sunday. Lunch will be served at noon. Election of officers for the ensuing year will be held.
The auxiliary will be selling angel pins with the proceeds benefiting Cancer Aid and Research Fund.
The hospital chairman reported bingo boards, puzzles and playing cards will be presented to the Missouri Veterans Home. Missouri Veterans Home bingo will be held May 24. Volunteers are needed.
Member Appreciation Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on May 24. All members of the auxiliary are invited. A celebration of auxiliary 60 years will be celebrated at the dinner.
Members were encouraged to attend the Memorial Day service to be held May 26 at the Osage Centre.
The next meeting will be June 12 at the post. A memorial service for deceased members will be held.
