Briefly

Baseball

  • Baseball commissioner Bud Selig called Friday for new talks with the players' union to ban ephedra, the nutritional supplement that may have contributed to the death of Baltimore pitcher Steve Bechler. Bechler died Monday, a day after collapsing at spring training with heatstroke.

    Golf

  • Charles Howell III finished with back-to-back birdies for a 6-under 65, giving him a one-stroke lead over Price going into the weekend in the Nissan Open.

Karrie Webb completed a round of 6-under par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Laura Davies after the second round of the ANZ Ladies Masters.

Nine-year Champions Tour player Mike McCullough shot a 4-under-par 67 Friday to take a one-shot lead in the Verizon Classic at the TPC of Tampa Bay.

    Motorsports

  • Dave Blaney won the first pole of his career on a cold, wet day at North Carolina Speedway. Blaney took the top spot by turning a lap in the No. 77 Ford at 154.683 mph. It was his first pole in 113 Winston Cup starts. His previous best starting spot was third, last year in Richmond, Va.

David Green won the pole for the Busch Series race at North Carolina Speedway, knocking Winston Cup rookie Jamie McMurray from the top starting spot with a late run Friday.

    Tennis

  • Taylor Dent struggled with his first serve but still had enough on his second to beat Vladimir Voltchkov 7-6 (1), 6-2 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Kroger St. Jude tournament. Defending champion Andy Roddick advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Robby Ginepri.
