She was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Sedgewickville, daughter of William D. and Goldie Rohan Pridemore. She and Jack Starkey were married Feb. 1, 1970. Starkey was a member of the Sedgewickville Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband, a daughter, Sarah Armstrong of Wappapello, Mo., and a brother, Jerry Pridemore of Perryville, Mo. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Liley Funeral Home in Patton, Mo. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Bailey officiating. Interment will follow at the Sedgewickville Lutheran Cemetery. William Timothy "Tim" Campbell, 85, of Mounds, Ill., died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at his home.
He was born July 30, 1922, in Diswood, Ill., son of Jesse Clyde and Hermie McGee Campbell. He and Wanda Essex were married, in 1940. Campbell worked at his Ford tractor dealership. He is survived by his wife; a son, Tim Campbell of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, two brothers and a sister. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin, Ill. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Buckles officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pulaski. ANNA, Ill. — Maxine Reed King, 89, of Anna died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Union County Hospital in Anna.
She was born May 19, 1918, at Higby, Mo., daughter of Clyde E. and Pattie Lucy Boyd Reed. She and Robert P. King were married March 4, 1942, at Tacoma, Wash. He died July 16, 1988. King is survived by a daughter, Patricia Tokarski-Seay of Urbana, Ill.; a son, Tim King of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter. She was a member and past deacon of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna, a member and past treasurer of the Women's Association of the church. She was retired from Anna-Jonesboro Community High as a secretary and was a past member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Randy Carstens officiating. Interment will be in the Anna cemetery. Harvey W. Protzel died May 9, 2008, at his son's home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born June 30, 1919, in St. Louis, the dear son of the late Irving and Henrietta Protzel. Beloved husband of the late Shirley Protzel. Dear father of Edward (Janet Jourman) Protzel, Hugh (Donna) Protzel and Jerre (the late Elmo) Crowell. Loving grandfather of Isaac, Alexander and Ethan Protzel, Lori (Chris Blumenhorst) Lipkind and David (Deidre Cone) Lipkind. Dear great-grandfather of Esabel and Benjamin Blumenhorst. Beloved brother of the late Robert (Evelyn) Protzel. Dear nephew of the late Morris "Butch" Yatkeman. Our dear uncle, cousin and friend. Mr. Protzel served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was the district supervisor for Management Consulting Services (Ernst and Ernst), president and CEO of Safeguard Business Systems, president of Data Processing Management Association and president and CEO of H.W. Protzel and Co. Inc. (a management consulting firm). Mr. Protzel served as president of Missouri Lodge—B'nai Brith, North Valley Lodge—B'nai Brith and State of Missouri B'nai Brith. He was also a board member of the Anti-Defamation League. He was a contributing editor for the National DPMA magazine and National Office magazine. Mr. Protzel had numerous articles on improving business practices published in a number of foreign countries, as well as the United States. He was a nationally well-known speaker to business conventions. After retirement in 1983, he was the song and dance man with the traveling entertainers group known as the Klassy Kickers. Harvey and his late wife Shirley were recognized world travelers. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, 1601 North and South Road, St. Louis. DONGOLA, Ill. — Juanita Burd, 81, of Dongola died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Jonesboro Health Care Center.
She was born March 15, 1927, in Cairo, Ill., daughter of Thomas and Ethel Barnwell McCain. She and Roland Burd were married Jan. 6, 1945. Burd was a member of Gospel Assembly Church in Anna, Ill., and had worked as a home health nurse. Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Loretta Maeie and Martha Killian; five brothers, Clyde McCain, Tom McClain, Wayne McClain, Ronald McClain and Bob McClain. She was preceded in death by two infant daughters, a sister and two brothers. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro, Ill. PERRYVILLE, Mo. — Melvin Hennemann, 99, of Perryville died Friday, May 9, 2008, at Perry Oaks Manor in Perryville.
He was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Perry County, Mo., son of Theodore and Mary Balsman Hennemann. He and Emma Boxdorfer were married June 27, 1931, in Chester, Ill. She preceded him in death. Hennemann worked for International Shoe Co. and Saberliner Corp. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Crosstown, Mo. Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Hennemann of Perryville, James Hennemann of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Melvin Hennemann Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Stephen Hennemann of Omaha, Neb.; five daughters, Imogene Jokerst of Ste. Genevieve, Patricia Huber of Perryville, Laverne Mehner of Bloomsdale, Mo., Lawana Harlan of Birmingham, Ala., Mary Jane Raniszeski of St. Charles, Mo.; 36 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville. Judith Louise Hopkins, 66, of Bellevue, Wash., formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at her home, after a battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 1, 1941, in Bonne Terre, Mo., daughter of William L. and Leatha Drury Berry. She and Joseph V. Hopkins were married Sept. 5, 1964, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Hopkins was a graduate of the former Cape Catholic High School, now Notre Dame Regional High School. She also attended Southeast Missouri State University. She worked as a dental assistant before her marriage, and then as a secretary while her husband was in graduate school. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of St. Louise Church in Bellevue. Survivors include her husband; a brother, Bill (Roberta) Berry of New Orleans and Colorado; and a sister, Janice (Bob) Shirley of Cape Girardeau. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be at 7. Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. James Sr., 81, of Jackson died Friday, May 9, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
He was born June 16, 1926, in Lilbourn, Mo., son of Oscar and Mary Douglas James. He and Velma June Baugher were married June 27, 1943, in Sikeston, Mo. She died Jan. 29, 2005. James served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was baptized at First Christian Church in Sikeston. His truck driving career began at LA Tucker Truck Line. He retired in 1983 after 33 years of trucking. He then farmed. Survivors include a son, Bill James Jr. of Antioch, Tenn.; three daughters, Patsy Parmeter, Barbara Schilling and Glenda Cobb, all of Jackson; two brothers, Walter James of Belleville, Ill., Clifford James of Arnold, Mo.; four sisters, Veda Vaught of Bertrand, Mo., Wanda Tidwell and Naomi Mayberry, both of St Louis, Linda Alliston of Sikeston; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. PERRYVILLE, Mo. — Norman H. Steffens, 85, of Perryville died Friday, May 9, 2008, at Independence Care Center of Perry County.
He was born April 27, 1923, at Farrar, Mo., son of Ernst and Rosa Verseman Steffens. He and Irma F. Meier Steffens were married Jan. 25, 1948. She died Aug. 12, 2000. Steffens was a retired supervisor at Gilster Mary Lee mixing room. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Perryville Guard of Honor, American Legion Post 133, Berean Bible Class, Immanuel Lutheran Men's Club and Men's Choir. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Steffens of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Kathryn Stueve of Frohna, Mo.; three sisters, LaVern Fox of Cape Girardeau, Edith Roth of Farrar, Virginia Guyott of St. Charles, Mo.; three brothers, Arlan Steffens of Farrar, Cleo Steffens of St. Louis, Wayne Steffens of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with American Legion wake at 7 p.m., and from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Monday at Young and Sons Chapel. He was born March 29, 1931, at Lavall, Mo., son of James and Mary Littles Breeden. He and Emily Buckley were married in Corning, Ark. She died Dec. 9, 2000. Breeden was a retired bricklayer and a member of the Essex Apostolic Church in Essex, Mo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include two sons, Butch and Ricky Breeden, both of Bloomfield, Mo.; three daughters, Terri Moore of Cape Girardeau, Carmen Bigalow of Moultrie, Ga., Teresa Margaff of Naples, Fla.; a sister, Nancy Swinger of Morehouse; a brother, Jerry Breeden of Kokomo, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, four sisters and three brothers. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at Essex Apostolic Church. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Young and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. BENTON, Mo. — Bartley C. Ferrell, 84, of Benton died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 23, 1923, at Bertrand, Mo., son of Ercy Earl and Mary Velda Alley Ferrell. He and Melba Kirkpatrick were married March 29, 1947. Bartley was a member of the U.S. Army and served on the Pacific islands of Tinian and Saipan during World War II. His most cherished memory was personally observing the formal surrender of the Japanese to General Douglas MacArthur aboard the USS Missouri Sept. 2, 1945. Bartley retired, and in his latter years enjoyed gardening. He was especially known for his prize-winning tomatoes, which he generously shared with friends and family. Bartley was a faithful attender of First Assembly of God Church in Scott City. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bartley "Buz" Ferrell of Benton, Larry H. Ferrell of Jackson; three daughters, Barbara (Dannie) Dick of Tampa, Fla., Janet Smith of Memphis, Tenn., Sandra (Clayton) Bryant of Benton; two brothers, Tom Ferrell of East Prairie, Mo., Paul (Beverly) Ferrell of Wahpeton, N.D.; a sister, Jeanne Elliott of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren whom he loved beyond all measure, Matthew Ferrell, Stacy Dick of Tampa, Lance Ferrell of Chicago, Jennifer Ferrell and Michael Ferrell of Jackson; and many very special nieces and nephews. Debbie Sue Johnson, 44, of Jackson died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Aug. 3, 1963, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Charles Clay and Jane Ann Moore Copen. Johnson had worked at Beverly Koehler Bookkeeping Services. Survivors include two sons, Kyle and Kellen Johnson of Jackson; a daughter, Kelsey Johnson-Keister of Jackson; her father of Cape Girardeau; five brothers, Charles, Joe, Chris and Leonard Copen, all of Cape Girardeau, Tom Copen of Jackson; two sisters, Tina Sample and Mary Copen of Cape Girardeau; and two stepgrandchildren. She was born Oct. 10, 1930, at Bloomfield, daughter of Riley and Kate Robison Hester. She and Jim Long were married Aug. 20, 1971, at Advance, Mo. Long worked 40 years at Elder Manufacturing Co. in Dexter, Mo. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Terral Ellsworth of DeSoto, Mo., Michael Stoker of Bloomfield, Danny Stoker of Dexter; a daughter, Kay Pyle of Bloomfield; two stepsons, Michael Long of Monett, Mo., Mitchell Long of Advance; and a stepdaughter, Vicki Long of Iowa. Also three brothers; Dalton Hester of Florida, Rudolph Hester of O'Fallon, Mo., Gary Hester of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four sisters, Cozette Williamson of Essex, Mo., Jackie Eaves of Bernie, Mo., Janice Midgett of Dexter, Bonnie Lufler of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Ware, Ill., son of William H. and Adella Luthy Wareing. He first married Rebecca Geraldine Dent, who preceded him in death. He and Barbara J. Ferguson were married Aug. 30, 1997, at Anna. Wareing was retired from the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy, serving more than 20 years during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of First Baptist Church and lifetime member of Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Rebecca Pind of Jonesboro, Ill., Robin Jackson of Dongola, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Elise Lanier of Newbern, N.C.; a brother, Paul Wareing of Thebes, Ill.; a sister, Martha Steinborn of Florissant, Mo.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five great-stepgrandchildren; and four great-great-stepgrandchildren. CHAFFEE, Mo. — Robert "Bob" Cahill, 70, of Chaffee died Friday, May 9, 2008, at his home.
He was born Nov. 14, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Thomas and Molly Feldman Cahill. He and Margaret Cupples were married May 25, 1966. Cahill was retired from Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in Brooklyn. He was of the Catholic belief and a member of Chaffee Elks Lodge 1810. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert (Melissa) Cahill of Worden, Ill., Kevin (Sharlene) Cahill of Fruitland; and five grandchildren, Ryan, Hanna and Jenna Cahill of Worden, Chelsey and Chase Cahill of Fruitland. She was born Sept. 29, 1928, at Aurora, Ill., daughter of Robert B. and Jessie Jackson Caswell. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Mounds. Survivors include seven daughters, Jeanna Juliano of Oveido, Fla., Sherry Parks, of Sandhurst, Ill., Barb Rose, of Paris, Tenn., Beth Drummond, of Puryear, Tenn., Patty Makris, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Lisa Tolbert of Tamms, Ill., and Gloria Sutton, of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Dan Stout of Benton, Ill., Darrel Linden of Ormond Beach, John Steil of Advance, Mo.; a sister, Liz Capet of Yorkville, Ill., four stepdaughters, Sue Gilley of Mounds, Karen Rodriguez and, Lois Ann Merema, both of Cummings, Ga., Sandy Stout of Rodgersville, Mo., three stepsons, Jim Stout of Metropolis, Ill., Richard Stout of Cape Girardeau, Bill Stout of Groves, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born Aug. 30, 1945, at Vanduser, Mo., son of John Almon and Reba Velma Johnson Puckett. He and Mary Letisha Campbell were married June 2, 1968, in Scott City. Puckett was a truck driver with Griffin Distributing of Sikeston, Mo. He was a member of Oran First Baptist Church, Morley Masonic Lodge 184 and Promenaires Square Dance Club of Cape Girardeau. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joshua Puckett of Oran; two daughters, Alisha Lacy Puckett of Dexter, Mo., Leslie (Eric) Dahl of Las Vegas; his mother, Reba Hazel of Advance, Mo.; a brother, Roy Donald (Lucy) Puckett of Long Beach, Miss.; a sister, Ruth Ann (Donald) Freeman of Chaffee, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jordan and Hannah Lacy of Dexter, Mo., Taylor "Taterbug" Dahl of Las Vegas; 14 nieces and nephews; and 21 great-nieces and nephews. She was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Scott City, daughter of Gordon and Iva Estella Jones Tapp. She married Henry Lee Massie, who preceded her in death. Marjorie was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in Columbia, Ill. Survivors include two sons, Charles (Karen) Massie of Fairview Heights, Ill., Gary (Sandy) Massie of Dupo; a daughter, Beverly (Mike) Pulcher of Dupo; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters. The funeral was held Wednesday at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo, with the Revs. Paul Rose and Wayne Welborn officiating. Burial was in Palmier Hill Cemetery in Columbia. BELL CITY, Mo. — Lefern Long, 84, of Bell City died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Dec. 23, 1923, at Bell City, daughter of Josh and Bertha Mayberry Kneezle. She and Shelby Long were married July 31, 1940. He died June 29, 2001. Long was a member of Bell City United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Spencer Long of Springfield, Mo., Dennis Long of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Janet Rials of Palestine, Texas; two sisters, Barbara Lewis of Sikeston, Mo., Inis Stamper of Bell City; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, Mo. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to service time Monday at First Missionary Baptist Church in Cairo. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with Ronnie White, Abraham Jones and Donald Topps officiating. Burial will be in Mound City National Cemetery.
