Jack Bridges is a man on a mission
Posted Tuesday, May 6, 2008 @ 05:44 pm
I had lunch today with an interesting fellow — Jack Bridges.
For those who don't recognize the name, Jack a local man, is the father of Shawn Bridges, a man we first wrote about back in 2006. Shawn was a meth addict. His use of the drug eventually led to his early, painful death, but before his mind was gone completely, Shawn decided to use his story to discourage others from using the drug.
The result was the documentary "No More Sunsets."
Now Jack is leading an effort to take an anti-drug message to teens and parents around the area. A presentation was scheduled for last month at Scott City High School, but was rescheduled to this Thursday.
One presentation at 1 p.m. is for high school students only, but the public is welcome to a 6 p.m. presentation at the same location.
Jack is running this thing as pretty much a one-man show, but he needs some help. He needs some donations. He needs some refreshments to provide the people at his presentations. And he's hoping you can help.
From my time spent with Jack today, he doesn't seem like a man seeking fame or glory. He's a guy who lost his child way too early, and he doesn't want that to have happened in vain, or to happen to anyone else. He has plenty of guilt, admitting that he had his eyes closed to the dangers of meth before his son chose to take the drug.

I'm in the midst of a two-day seminar for Rust Communications on enhancing Internet products. So this got me thinking: We haven't asked you in a while what you think of the new site. So, what do you think? Any kind of feedback is good -- likes, dislikes, suggestions about things that would make you spend more time here.

More on the ethanol debate; the 'gasless motor'; state population projections
Posted Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 07:03 pm
In the aftermath of the Missouri General Assembly's exploration of eliminating the 10 percent ethanol mandate, I received a call from Mike Geske, a Matthews, Mo., farmer and president of the Missouri Corn Growers Association.
Geske is concerned about the desire by some to repeal the mandate, and to seemingly eliminate ethanol from our energy policy.

Remember the great quake of 1990 centered at New Hamburg?
I do. I was a student at Lee Hunter Elementary in Sikeston, and I vividly recall ducking under the desk in classic school emergency fashion while the world shook all around.
