Perrilloux boosts JSU's football outlook
Posted Thursday, May 15, 2008 @ 10:10 am

The addition of Ryan Perrilloux to Jacksonville State's football team just made everybody's job in the OVC a lot tougher.

Perrilloux, kicked off LSU's national championship team after repeated off-the-field problems, signed Wednesday with JSU.

The Gamecocks, always an OVC contender, did not have one of their better seasons last year — for goodness sake, SEMO even beat them — and after coach Jack Crowe kicked talented junior quarterback Cedric Johnson off the team earlier this year, JSU faced the prospect of starting a true freshman QB.

Perrilloux's addition changes everything for the Gamecocks and might make them the OVC favorite for 2008.

Perrilloux, who will be eligible immediately for the Gamecocks, was the nation's top-rated QB coming out of a high school. He was primarily a backup during his first two years at LSU, but was the MVP of last season's Southeastern Conference title game. He was expected to start for the Tigers this year.

No single incident involving Perrilloux while at LSU seems too outrageous, but he did have several of them.

Perrilloux was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification last summer. He was involved in a nightclub fight in November, causing him to miss a game, although he was later cleared of wrongdoing.

LSU coach Les Miles again suspended Perrilloux in February after he missed a team meeting, skipped some classes and was late for conditioning workouts. He was reinstated April 6, then let go.

Miles said no specific violation led to the quarterback's dismissal, and Miles apparently vouched for Perrilloux's overall character in conversations with Crowe.

Crowe defended the decision to sign Perrilloux, which was approved and apparently endorsed by the JSU president.

"For me to remove the best offensive player we had and maybe the best in the league {Johnson} for disciplinary reasons and then compromise on this one ... would be crazy," Crowe told The Associated Press.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with JSU nabbing Perrilloux. If SEMO had the chance, I'd have said go for it. What do you think?

The Richmond (Ky.) Register newspaper reported that Lisa Pace has emerged as among the top candidates to succeed Larry Joe Inman as Eastern Kentucky's head women’s basketball coach.

Pace, who played for EKU, spent seven seasons as a SEMO assistant coach before joining Inman's staff at EKU prior to last season. Inman recently retired.

The newspaper said other leading candidates for the position are East Carolina assistant Chrissy Roberts and Transylvania coach Greg Todd, with Roberts — a former EKU standout — apparently the leading candidate.

The paper said EKU could announce its new coach as early as next week.
