New nail salon set to open next month

King Nails is getting a face-lift.

James Nguyen recently purchased the nail care business, which he plans to turn into King Nails and Spa. The business is moving from 1131 N. Kingshighway, Suite I to Suite A and B, and now offers manicures, pedicures, waxing and facials. Nguyen said he plans to open Dec. 1, and will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Nguyen's last nail business - Nail Pro - was purchased in 2000 and sold in 2001. Seven years later Nguyen said he's excited about what the future holds in this new business.

What do you think of the auto bailout?

It looks as if the auto industry bailout is on hold for now, as Democratic leaders said they wouldn't help the Big Three until the companies presented them with a plan detailing how federal funding would stabilize their industry. What do you think of the $25 billion plan?

I am working on a Thanksgiving economics story and would like to know who all is planning to stay closer to home next week due to the economy. Also, I'd like to know if anyone is planning to cut back on Thanksgiving meals because of the rising food prices. If you're planning to keep all plans as usual, why? New hospice option offered in Southeast Missouri and my first trip to Marble Hill

Tri-County Hospice Services - a member of Pyramid Home Health Services - has established another option for Southeast Missouri residents. The new office is located at the corner of Independence and Water streets in Cape Girardeau.

Austin's of Alto Pass, Ill., closing after 23 years in business

After over 23 years in business the antique shop Austin's of Alto Pass, located in the old grade school in Alto Pass, Ill., will be closing its doors. Owner Jan Austin told me the shop will close after a Nov. 28 to 30 open house. The open house will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 28 to 29 and noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 30.

As I've mentioned a few times before, I love going to malls. Yes, I know this is a bit unusual for a male but that may go back to my days of working at the Chick-fil-A at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Ala. That fast food restaurant earned the distinction of the busiest mall Chick-fil-A in the nation one year I was there. Maybe the time I spent inside the Galleria rubbed off on me.

Chambers adding members thanks to October drive

Friday morning I attended a breakfast honoring new Jackson Chamber of Commerce executive director Brian Gerau, who assumed the post Nov. 1. Gerau, who is the husband of Southeast Missourian advertising executive Sara Gerau, seems to be a great fit for the job. The chamber's membership increased by 38 during its October membership drive to its current 400 members.

Guess who's moving into the old Fred's building in Jackson

A little more than two hours ago I toured the inside of the old Fred's building in Jackson, which will be the new home of Riverside Regional Public Library. Patrons who visit their new location at 1997 E. Jackson Blvd. early next year will notice a much larger library and new features.

Bott Radio Network expands into four Southeast Missouri cities

Four new radio stations hit the airwaves in Southeast Missouri on Nov. 1. Listeners can now hear Bible teaching, Christian news and information on Bott Radio Network from Oran at 90.5 FM, in Cape Girardeau at 103.3 FM, in Scott City at 92.1 FM and in Sikeston at 99.7 FM, 24 hours a day.

Renovations, expansion underway at Fireplace Center/River City Masonry

The Fireplace Center/River City Masonry at 1028 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau is currently in the process of renovating their business and adding 1,000 feet onto its showroom. Fireplace Center co-owner Noretta Blattner believes that once complete, the showroom will be the largest one between St. Louis, Mo., and Memphis, Tenn.
