A prehistoric beast?
(Column ~ 09/17/22)
This thing surprised me when I zoomed in on it with my camera. It looked like a strange prehistoric animal walking down an ice covered hillside with an iceberg in the distance. In reality this is a tiny insect that I believe is a kind of weevil. I searched for an image like it and discovered that there are more than 3,000 species of weevils in North America. ...

Skinning cats
(Column ~ 09/17/22)
We have all heard the expression: "There's more than one way to skin a cat." I don't have a clue where this expression came from but doubt it has anything to do with cats. I guess another way of saying the same thing is there is more than one way of doing it or getting it done. I have skinned a boatload of coyotes down through the years. Dad showed me how with his trusty Old Timer pocket knife back when I was a kid. Showed me how to stretch the hide out and air dry it. But never skinned a cat...

Known by its fruit
(Column ~ 09/17/22)
Sept. 11 was on a Sunday this year. For many of us, Sunday is a busy day filled with worship, lunch, meetings, more worship, then maybe more meetings. For others, it is the last lazy day before the start of the workweek. Did you think about the terrorist attack in 2001? Did you remember those who died in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012? When we reflect on these kinds of acts of terrorism, we have to ask honest questions about the role religion plays...

An important announcement about newspaper delivery
(Column ~ 09/17/22)
One of my first jobs was carrying the local newspaper. In my case: The Bulletin Journal. It was a great experience, which taught the importance of perseverance, punctuality, customer service and the reward of good, honest effort. Times change, though, and child carriers disappeared from the economic landscape in the United States for many reasons, not least being the concern of parents about kids working alone...

Similar inflation challenges and stumbles in the UK
(Column ~ 09/17/22)
Shortly after taking over as the new U.K. prime minister, Liz Truss announced plans to fight inflation by capping household energy prices over the next two years. Blimey! Billed as the most free-market prime minister since Margaret Thatcher, Truss's first major move is a counterproductive scheme that will prolong the United Kindom's energy woes and increase its budget deficit. What could go wrong?...
