The highly regarded Rowan family
(Column ~ 05/07/22)
Henry Rowan Sr. opened a barber business in Cape Girardeau in 1867. Rowan was born in Mississippi (circa 1842), likely enslaved. His mulatto complexion reflected a complicated family history. In freedom, skin tone may have gained him a measure of privilege in post-Civil War society, but the integrity of his character surpassed any unearned presumptions. He and his family held esteemed reputations in Cape Girardeau, from 1867 through the mid-1900s...

A red fox pup
(Column ~ 05/07/22)
I took this photo the late evening of April 30. The weather was stormy and a tornado watch had been issued for much of Southeast Missouri. I knew where a litter of red fox pups was hanging out, and after work I headed there. The wind was gusting to near 20 miles per hour, and I used the wind to my advantage. Wind concealed noise I made during my approach as well as help hide my slow movements by keeping leaves and bushes in near constant state of motion...

Mom's name
(Column ~ 05/07/22)
My best friend's mother joined the church I serve. Of course, anytime anyone joins the church, it is exciting. She is my best friend's mom. So her joining was extra special. In my church, people walk an aisle at the end of the service and tell the pastor they want to join the church. The pastor, me, then introduces them to the congregation. However, there was one problem when my best friend's mom joined the church...

The Holy Spirit wants to help you
(Column ~ 05/07/22)
This past weekend, I got to lead the Confirmation retreat for the eighth graders at our church. At it, we talked about what it means to become an adult in the Church, to discover the unique ways we as individuals are gifted to serve the larger body, a discovery process that can start at Confirmation through receiving the Holy Spirit. We discussed how we are called to know God, so we can know ourselves, so we can then serve the people around us...

Whether or not you have a good relationship with your biological mother, you should be grateful to be alive. That is something we can all celebrate on Mother's Day...

Mother's Day is for planting
(Column ~ 05/07/22)
Mother's Day means I can put flowers in the ground without fear of frost. It's the commercial name given to my annual OK-to-plant day. It's time for warmth and new growth in my planting zone. Any other reason to honor the day has been determined by someone else. Consumers are expected to spend roughly $31.7 billion in honor of Mother's Day this year according to Yahoo Finance, and I wonder if my plants are included in that total...
