Thankful People: Hellwege family thankful after son's health scare at fair parade
(Community ~ 11/23/17)
When Leslie Hellwege thinks back on the day her youngest son stopped breathing, the scary part is how many things went right. Her 3-year-old son Paxton was supposed to go and watch the SEMO District Fair parade with another family member that day. If that had happened, she says, people may not have realized something was wrong until it was too late. And if she hadn't been sitting with her friend -- a policeman's wife -- she might have been too panicked to get Paxton help...

It's time to embrace an underappreciated fruit — persimmon
(Community ~ 11/23/17)
You've likely seen persimmon in the grocery store and then shied away from it, not quite sure what to do with it. The most common variety in the U.S. is the fuyu persimmon, also called Japanese persimmon, and it looks similar to a slightly flatter orange tomato. The skin is thin and edible like the tomato, but texture is firmer, more like a cantaloupe. The flavor falls somewhere in between the two: not quite as acidic as a tomato and slightly less sweet than a melon...

Cooking on deadline: Big Butterscotchy Oatmeal Cookies are memorable holiday treat
(Community ~ 11/23/17)
I haven't been consistently happy with my oatmeal cookie recipe for a while. Sometimes they turn out perfectly -- fairly flat, chewy and moist in the middle, with crinkly, caramelized edges (not cakey or rounded) and a butterscotch-esque flavor. Other times, they don't follow orders, staying too puffed, or becoming a little dry and less damply dense than I crave...
