Two towns seek to revitalize with Purpose Built model; Cape may use it as blueprint
(Local News ~ 12/18/16)
Two cities. Two differing approaches to revitalizing struggling neighborhoods. Both cities -- Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Rome, Georgia -- may offer a blueprint for redeveloping Cape Girardeau's south side. Spartanburg and Rome have embraced the Purpose Built Communities redevelopment model, which originated in Atlanta in the mid-1990s to revitalize a poverty-plagued, crime-ridden neighborhood...

In his address at Southeast Missouri State University’s winter commencement ceremony Saturday, Southeast professor Willie Redmond said life after college can be seen much like another course. Returning with a vision
(Community ~ 12/18/16)
Ben Porter didn't uproot his life and family and move nearly 900 miles to dream small. When God called him and his wife, Rose, to leave Washington, D.C., with their 7-year-old daughter, Kiersten, and return to Cape Girardeau after an absence of about 30 years, the 1987 Cape Girardeau Central High School graduate packed a few belongings and a load of passion and vision...

Candy canes' origins may go back to 17th-century Germany
(Community ~ 12/18/16)
According to Will Ferrell, playing the part of Buddy the Elf, unquestionably his greatest role, candy canes are among the four major food groups in the elfin diet. And why shouldn't they be? Candy canes are to Christmas what pumpkins are to Halloween, colored eggs are to Easter or latkes are to Hanukkah: foods without which the holiday wouldn't be the same...

There's a story told, the origins of which I'm not familiar. It's one of those tales that has been difficult to forget. A yearning spirit
(Community ~ 12/18/16)
A few weeks ago, I felt my spirit was yearning and aching, and I found myself being afraid of that. A yearning spirit felt like a threat to my contentment, a threat to my ability to ignore my own poverty (and therefore others') and a threat to my ability to do things on my own and be OK. I wasn't sure why I was feeling this...

Always dreaming of a white Christmas
(Community ~ 12/18/16)
My favorite secular Christmas song of all time is "White Christmas." Having been raised in the Midwest and now living in the South, the wistful dream of a white Christmas captures me...

Right to Work
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/18/16)
I see that the GOP is ready to enact a ‘Right to Work’ law. More regulations and denying self-rule, isn’t that two of the things that the GOP is suppose to oppose?...

Truth matters, victims matter, David matters
(Column ~ 12/18/16)
Who am I? I'm in the Missouri Jefferson City Correctional Center. I've spent roughly 16 years in prison as an innocent man. I've been accused of committing a murder in Scott County, Missouri, I didn't commit. Officers conspired to convict me. The evidence says it wasn't me. The evidence has always said it wasn't me. Despite the evidence, it appears law enforcement officers have conspired to convict me, the appellate court has denied me and the Missouri Attorney General's Office has opposed me. My family believes I'm innocent. My friends believe I'm innocent. The evidence confirms my innocence. I am innocent. I'm represented by attorneys with Bryan Cave in St. Louis. The Southeast Missourian in Cape Girardeau is covering my story. Who am I? Josh Kezer? David Robinson? A white man? A black man? Who am I? David Robinson.
