Electrical circuits overloaded by air conditioners were the probable cause of a fire Monday that severely damaged the attic of a house at 301 N. Pacific. The fire, which began in electrical lines in the attic shortly before 2:30 p.m., was apparently the result of overloaded circuits, said city firefighter Mark Hasheider. The three window air conditioners in use in the second-floor apartment may have been contributing factors in overloading the circuits, he said...

Southeast Missouri State University has named 1,427 students to its Dean's List for academic achievement during the spring 1998 semester. Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours during the spring session...

Missouri Department of Transportation officials hope to have an initial review of a proposed package of road and highway improvements completed within a month. Last week, representatives from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Cape Girardeau County presented to the department a package of 19 proposed improvements to local, state and county roads and highways...

Increased revenue and decreased expenditures will bring about a strong turnaround in the Cape Girardeau School District's budget this fiscal year. Board members learned of the district's improved financial standing during a Cape Girardeau Board of Education meeting Monday night. One of the sneakiest moves in recent years at the federal level has to be the so-called Internet hookup fee for schools, libraries and rural health care being imposed on telephone customers by the Federal Communications Commission.
