(Letter to the Editor ~ 07/25/97)
To the editor: Doe Run Co.'s mineral prospecting permit should not be approved. Mineral exploration drilling may do no long-term damage to its surroundings, but the exploration drilling leads to lead mining, which does permanent damage to its surroundings...

VISIONLESS CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS PLAY FARCE
(Local News ~ 07/25/97)
"Where there is no vision, the people perish..." (Proverbs 29:18) Congressional Republicans appear to be playing a summer-stock repertoire of farce (defined as "a light dramatic composition marked by broadly satirical comedy and improbable plot"). Last week, what passes for the House "leadership" revealed its appalling weakness when a group of high-ranking members could not even engineer a coup in their own party. ...

Recently, a well-preserved log cabin dating from the 1820s or 1830s was found inside a 20th century frame house on South Frederick Street. Quite possibly the cabin is the oldest structure in the city -- at least older than any other known building...

SPEAK OUT
(Speak Out ~ 07/25/97)
FOR ALL you conservative TV-censoring and constantly preaching folks, I give a recommendation to you. If you really want to live in a place where religion is very, very strict and constantly taught, then move to Iran. I JUST want to say thanks to Wal-Mart Supercenter for the free concert in Cape Friday night. Roy Wade Kimes and Jeff Moore were fantastic. To the people who didn't come, you really missed a great show. Hope the guys get to come back to Cape...
