SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: I'LL ADMIT THAT THIS CLARK KENT IS NO SUPERMAN
(Column ~ 01/29/97)
When I first got into journalism I felt invincible. I thought I could go all night without sleep, write 20 stories in a week and never make a mistake. The last two months have convinced me without a doubt that I am no Superman. I started making some mistakes in my articles. Most of them were plain mental errors like confusing names or places, but they were there...

LETTERS: LISTENING TO OTHERS' VIEWS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/29/97)
To the editor: In Spanish, a speaker may close his address by saying, "He dicho" (I have spoken), as if to say "the Lord has spoken," and with that air of finality assumes that there could be no basis for disagreement or further comment. Of course, absolute truths have been proven beyond question of a doubt. In time, one learns that there are fewer of these intellectual absolutes than one at first may assume...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 01/29/97)
IT'S VERY disheartening to me to see how many church pastors and their wives are involved in private businesses. Our churches need full time spiritual leaders ministering to the congregation and the community. When these folks accepted their positions, some in very large churches, did they plan to be in direct competition with members of their church? I understand that some smaller churches cannot support their pastors. ...

CITY'S SALARIES SHOULD BE COMPARED TO LOCAL PAY SCALES
(Editorial ~ 01/29/97)
The city of Cape Girardeau is taking a new approach to employee salaries. Instead of considering salary increases at the end of the budget process, employee compensation will move to the front. The aim is to make city salaries more competitive with comparable Missouri cities such as Jefferson City, Joplin, Sedalia and St. Joseph. A report presented to the City Council last fall showed that Cape Girardeau employee salaries lag about 4 percent behind the average of these cities...

(Editorial ~ 01/29/97)
Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference. The Cape Girardeau City Council backed down from a 5 percent proposed increase in city water rates at its last meeting. A 3 percent increase was approved instead. It is a reasonable compromise that should earn the City Council kudos from citizens...
