Construction activity in Missouri was down 39 percent in November and 7 percent for the first 11 months of the year. The F.W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill, an authority on the construction market, reported construction for November at $412,020,000, down from the $673,447,000 the previous November...

The Small Business Development Center will conduct counseling sessions in four areas this month. The sixth annual "Missouri Chamber Day at the Capitol" will be held Feb. 12 at Jefferson City. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Humana Inc., one of the country's biggest health maintenance organizations, will eliminate up to 5 percent of its work force to help counter disappointing profits. ATLANTA -- The Coca-Cola Co., without any announcement, has changed the design of the cans that carry its major brand. The Atlanta-based soft drink giant has eliminated the vertical white ribbon on its cans of Coca-Cola Classic and changed the wording design. The Coca-Cola logo, formerly vertical, is now almost horizontal, and wording has been added so that the can reads, "Always Coca-Cola Classic."...

The newest operation of the Cape Girardeau-based supplier of automotive, truck and agricultural parts, is at 128 Mine La Motte Road in Fredericktown. Darryl Asher, who has more than 30 years of auto parts experience, is manager of the new store. Ice in the Mississippi River means everything moves a little slower at Missouri Barge Lines and the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority. Law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor's office can be proud of the fact that a record number of criminal cases were filed in Cape Girardeau County last year. It indicates both are doing commendable jobs. The staff of Cape Girardeau County's prosecuting attorney, Morley Swingle, brought 2,050 felony and misdemeanor charges in 1996, 100 more than were filed in 1995. That includes 335 drunken-driving cases but not other traffic violations. The numbers have been steadily growing since 1992...

While Cape Girardeau County led the region in the number of vehicle accidents in 1995, it also led in seat-belt usage by people who were involved in accidents. Understandably, more accidents occur in Cape Girardeau County than in any other Southeast Missouri county because, with 61,000 people, it is more heavily populated. Almost 70 percent of the 3,158 accidents that occurred in the county that year happened in Cape Girardeau, the heaviest-populated city in the region...
