To the Editor:Throughout the years my family and I regarded recreational gambling as an acceptable form of entertainment. A painful experience has changed my mind. Growing up near a maor gambling city, I'd often heard stories of excessive betting and the trouble individual experience as a result. I could not relate to their experience.. I was sure that problems blamed on gambling were merely the results of weak personalities, alternative lifestyles...

To the Editor: In response to Mr. Williams who wrote an article advocating the abolishing of State Board of Cosmetology for the benefit of one person!! He stated it was a monopoly of 100 people. First - it is not a monopoly but thousands of dedicated, hard-working law abiding professionals studying and practicing the art and science of hairdressing...

To the Editor: Five months have not changed a thing. Knowing it is repetitious, let me say again: Riverboat gambling, no matter in what light its promoters and proponents chose to cast it, is nothing but a snare and a delusion. "It snares the unwary, it preys on those least able to afford it, it deludes the ones it proposes to help" (except the House)...

The flood took a devastating toll on the entire upper Mississippi Valley region. But for all the losses, recent Cape Girardeau County and city sales tax revenues registered solid increases. The news is reassuring. The region has suffered so much from the flooding that reduced tax revenues would have been just another blow to our city and county, which are already dealing with increased costs due to flood cleanup. In the city of Cape Girardeau alone, flood expenses topped $300,000...

Robert Fruehwald has had kudos and crescendos in his short career as a composer, but Monday might be akin to a standing ovation.
