In the aftermath of the Oct. 5 election failure of a school improvements package for Cape Girardeau, the second time such an issue has failed, the Southeast Missourian published a clip-and-mail coupon seeking comments on the negative outcome. Several dozen people responded to our request. What follows are comments offered concerning the first question on the coupon. We publish them basically as submitted, hoping to draw from them something of the reasoning of those who voted against this issue...

Seth Benton of Cape Girardeau is attending the National Young Leaders Conference this week in Washington, D.C. The national leadership development program targets high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Benton, a senior at Cape Central High School, will be among 350 students attending the conference from across America...

Cape Girardeau's Taxpayer Action Network announced recently that the local Taxpayer's Action Day Rally will be combined with the St. Louis chapter. The rally will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. Louis County Library, 1640 S. Lindbergh, across from Plaza Frontenac. It will be one of 200 held across the country...

Diagnosed with leukemia seven years ago, 13-year-old Tracy Nicole Taylor will be recognized this weekend as one of the nation's "Real Heroes" for her efforts to bring a bit of cheer to young patients at a local hospital. ORAN -- Abbie Bugg, 89, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 11, 1993, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born Feb. 24, 1904, in Oran, daughter of William and Elizabeth Boutwell. She married Maurice A. Bugg, who died Jan. 20, 1983. Bugg attended Southeast Missouri State University, and taught school several years. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Methodist Church here. Bugg was a member of Oak Ridge Senior Center, AARP, and Oak Ridge Woman's Club, all in Tennessee...
