A new director has been named for the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Elizabeth R. Ader of Lee's Summit will begin duties as library director here April 1, filling a vacancy created by Terry Risko, who left in June. Freezing drizzle early Monday left an icy glaze on highways and sidewalks that made going rough for motorists and pedestrians alike. The ice nearly paralyzed rush-hour traffic. Most schools called off classes. JEFFERSON CITY - Throughout his campaign, Mel Carnahan promised his No. 1 priority would be education. In his inaugural address Monday, Carnahan made it clear he intends to keep that promise. With the passage of the holiday season comes the increased need for area blood donors to give someone else another chance at life. To meet the need, January has been set aside as National Blood Donor Month. "January is typically the heaviest blood usage month by area hospitals," said David Palmer, director of the American Red Cross office here. "There are periods throughout the year where we struggle to keep pace with the area hospital's demand for blood and January is one of them."...

Building Missouri's tourism industry can produce more tax revenue and new jobs and do it faster than any other form of economic development, say tourism proponents. The problem is how to fund the promotion effort needed to keep tourism growing. Part of the answer, says the Missouri Travel Council, is in a tourism funding bill that will increase the Missouri Division of Tourism budget...

A process that began two years ago this month and is now in its final phase holds as much promise for the future of Missouri as any task undertaken in recent years. GLEN ALLEN -- Glen W. (Shorty) Moore, 80, of Glen Allen died Jan. 10, 1993, at his home. He was of the Baptist faith and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired mechanic at Lutesville Motor Co. of Marble Hill. He was born in Glen Allen Sept. 30, 1912, to Clella and Elailie Robertson Moore. On Nov. 20, 1948, he married Ruby Rhodes.
