JACKSON -- Members of the Jackson Heritage Association hope a fund-raiser in October will help pay for upkeep of the historic Oliver House. A Cruise Party is planned for Oct. 3, and the grand prize will be a $3,000 gift certificate to a Cape Girardeau travel agency and $1,000 spending money...

With the November general election just 50 days away, Democratic leaders in Southeast Missouri are beginning to ask, Where's Geri? Geri Rothman-Serot of St. Louis County, who emerged from a 14-candidate field of unknowns last month to win the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, has not been seen in this part of the state. In fact, most party leaders have not heard from anyone associated with her campaign...

The SEMO District Fair has a new attraction this year, one made up of eight "big babies" who look the same to newcomers but have distinct personalities, says their owner, David Hale. "They don't look anything alike," said Hale of his camels that make up the world's only dromedary hitch...

By definition, volunteerism expending time and effort without monetary compensation involves sacrifice. Most volunteers work long and hard with no more than a simple "thank-you" for a reward. That and the satisfaction that comes from aiding a worthy cause...

David Wagner: "I moved back to this area a couple of years ago, so I remember the fair very well. I still like to venture down through the rides, but I don't ride any more. STE. GENEVIEVE Marina de Gabouri, a 52-acre full-service marina facility at the mouth of South Gabouri Creek along the Mississippi River at Ste. Genevieve, will hold its grand opening next month. "The new marina is designed to provide service for all sizes of boat traffic," said Jerry Boshert, a Missouri Extension Council member who is assisting with plans for the Oct. 4 grand opening. "The facility presents a park-like setting on the west bank of the Mississippi River just south of town."...

The March of Dimes WalkAmerica 1992 will take place in Cape Girardeau Oct. 17 and benefit the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. The walk will begin at Capaha Park at 9 a.m. WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes' largest fund-raising effort, happening in more than 1,400 communities in the United States and involving more than 800,000 participants...

In the hub of this election year, it's difficult to keep from becoming disheartened. Politicians too often say what they believe voters want to hear and seldom what they really think or what they will actually do if elected ("Read my lips," no more empty vows). As if the words and deeds of politicians weren't bad enough, the media's coverage of the election bias and single-issue overkill adds to the frustration...

A recent Associated Press review of figures released under the Campus Security Act showed that more than 4,000 violent crimes, including 16 murders and 493 rapes, were reported last year to security officials at the nation's 580 largest universities and colleges...

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education will consider moving ahead with revision of its policies manual when it meets this afternoon. The regular board meeting will convene at 4:30 p.m. at the Board of Education office, 61 N. Clark.
