Laid-off workers from Brown Shoe Co., Chrysler Corp. and Zenith will be eligible for $1.2 million in Trade Adjustment Assistance funds, U.S. Sens. Christopher S. Bond and John Danforth announced Thursday. The Department of Labor is awarding Missouri money to provide continuing services throughout the state, they said. ...

A candidate for governor recently confided that he had never seen Missourians as unhappy, pessimistic and angry as they are at this moment. If one reads, only occasionally, the national newsmagazines, this disclosure comes as no surprise. These publications for some time have been devoting their cover stories to "The Angry Voter" and "America's Lost Dream" and "The Disgruntled American."...

Cape Girardeau welcomes 4,000 educators today for this year's annual MSTA District teachers meeting. To the Editor: I want to ask why none of the men running for president has mentioned the troubles our nation's face. Not one has mentioned the national debt or the $1 trillion budget Bush has proposed, which is preposterous. No one has questioned the employment or, I should say, unemployment situation. No one has offered a solution, or a different approach, to any of the problems facing our nation. All any of them did was run the other candidates down...

Girls Scouts are celebrating their 80th anniversary Sunday with a special ceremony honoring 80 "Women of Distinction."
