An old friend of the military the four-cylinder, stick-shift, quarter-ton jeep is being phased out. "They're giving way to new and high-powered vehicles," said Capt. John Harmon of Milburn, Ky., a member of the 1140th Engineers Battalion of the Missouri Army National Guard. "The jeep is being replaced by what is called a HMM-MV, powered by a 398 V-8 diesel."...

A construction trades licensing law again dominated discussion at Monday's Cape Girardeau City Council meeting. The council took no action on the proposed law that would require licenses for virtually all construction trades contractors but discussed further refinement of the measure, which was tabled in May...

Monday was the hottest day of the year in Cape Girardeau. The 4 p.m. reading of 99 degrees at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport tied the record high for July 1, set in 1980. The airport temperature reached 98 degrees at 3 p.m., then dropped to 97 at 5 p.m...

ANNA, Ill. -- A 17-year-old Union County resident was killed Sunday when the car he was driving ran off a bridge at a curve and overturned on its top in a creek near here. The accident occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Illinois State Police at Ullin said Jeremy "Allen" Earnhart of Anna was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on the Friendship School Road, one mile east of Route 51, when the accident occurred...

Cape Girardeau is among 83 Missouri cities whose sales tax revenue for calendar year 1990 amounted to more than $100 per capita, a University of Missouri-Columbia study shows. The city of Cape Girardeau received more than $4.8 million from its 1-cent sales tax, which equaled $139.51 per resident based on the 1990 census of 34,438, the study said...

SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City Council Monday approved the purchase of almost $100,000 in materials that will be used to construct water and sewer lines to the Nash Road industrial area. Construction began last week on the project, which will cost more than $500,000 before it's through...

JACKSON -- Total assessed valuation in Jackson increased by over $3 million in 1991, to a total of $56,241,866, show figures prepared by Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller. The city's 1991 assessment was released by Mayor Carlton Meyer at Monday's meeting of the Jackson Board of Aldermen...

SIKESTON -- Freeman P. McCullah Jr., who began his career with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department in 1949 as a summer employee, was appointed Monday as chief engineer for the department's District 10 headquartered in Sikeston. McCullah has been assistant district engineer at the department's St. Louis metro area office in Kirkwood since 1988. In his new role, McCullah, 60, will oversee highway and transportation operations in 14 Southeast Missouri counties...

CHAFFEE - The City of Delta is eying the Chaffee City Jail as a place to hold its municipal lawbreakers, and it's an idea that doesn't sit well with Chaffee city officials. At its regular meeting Monday night, the Chaffee City Council sent a request for use of the jail from the city of Delta to the Chaffee Police Board. But the request didn't get sent to the board until some city officials voiced displeasure with it...

This brings to mind a column I wrote for this newspaper some 18 months ago. Many of those comments retain their relevance today...

The office brings an intensified federal law enforcement presence to Southeast Missouri. The result should be increased safety for all law-abiding citizens...

SCOTT CITY -- A fire at a Scott City industrial plant that burned for more than 48 hours and caused several explosions was finally brought under control by firefighters early Monday. At least 83 firefighters from 11 departments were called to the scene at just before 9 p.m. Saturday, and left at about 2 a.m. Monday after the last of the flames were extinguished, said Bill Crump, deputy fire chief for the Scott City Fire Department...

I WAS JUST calling to offer kudos to the people who organized the concert at the Parks and Recreation Department's Arena building. I attended it and enjoyed it immensely, and I'd like to just say good job to all who organized it and brought those bands in from out of town...
