ObituariesHuey D. Cook, 88, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Sedgewickville, Mo., son of Amaziah and Dicy Fulton Cook. He and Thelma Bollinger were married Dec. 14, 1941, in Sikeston, Mo. Mr. Cook served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. His formal education included graduating from Patton High School, Southeast Missouri State University and George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., with a master's degree in administration. Mr. Cook was in the teaching profession in Missouri 40 years. He was a teacher at Patton, Mo., principal at Steele, Mo., superintendent at Delta and for the last 18 years was state of Missouri district supervisor for the Elementary and Secondary Department of Education. He was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Cook of Cape Girardeau; three sons, Larry L. Cook of Hillsboro, Mo., Gary W. Cook and wife Judy of Festus, Mo., Ronald H. Cook and wife Brenda of Imperial, Mo.; a sister, Ailene Loos of Paducah, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Wilma Cook of Jackson; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, five sisters and a daughter-in-law. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steve Francis officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum. MATTHEWS, Mo. — Carolyn Lavern Dodson, 45, of Matthews died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at Close to Home in Matthews.
She was born Jan. 21, 1963, in Sikeston, Mo., daughter of Doyle and Wanda Cochran Crowden. Survivors include a son, Tyler Dodson of Texas; her mother, Wanda James of Essex, Mo.; two brothers, Donnie Crowden of Benton, Mo., Cliff Crowden of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Beverly Crowden of Cape Girardeau, Kristi Petty of Essex; and maternal grandmother, Gertrude Cochran of Dexter, Mo. No service is scheduled. Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston is in charge of arrangements. Frieda A. Lewis, 91, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Life Care Center.
She was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Cleveland, daughter of Charles W. and Flora Mae Klar Rose. She and Russell E. Lewis were married May 3, 1943, in Brownwood, Texas. He died Dec. 5, 1989. Lewis was a seamstress at Buckner-Ragsdale Department Store in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women, and had been a Sunday school teacher, choir member and vestry member. She had also been a Cub Scout den mother. Survivors include a daughter, Verbal Walter of Cape Girardeau; three sons, Darrell Lewis of Arvada, Colo., Merrill Lewis of Blaine, Minn., Russell Lewis of Cape Girardeau; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. There is no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Stephen Bergmann, the Rev. Patricia Williams and Gerald Jones officiating. Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Russell B. Welder, 66, formerly of Cape Girardeau, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, while on sabbatical with his wife in Thailand.
Mr. Welder was born Oct. 25, 1941, in Big Run, Pa. He was a veteran of the war in Vietnam and served 21 years in the Army. During his time in the service he was awarded numerous honors such as the Bronze Star Medal (for meritorious achievement in ground operation against hostile forces), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ PL, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, First Oak Leaf Cluster, Second Oak Leaf Cluster and a number of Meritorious Service Medals. Mr. Welder also enjoyed a second career as an official court reporter in Missouri 14 years. During his time as a court reporter for the 32nd Judicial Circuit of Missouri, he was the Region V vice president for the Missouri Court Reporters Association and served in that capacity several years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Welder; his father, Kenneth Welder Sr.; brothers, Boyd Welder and Kenneth Welder Jr., as well as his son, Joshua Welder. He is survived by wife, Paisoon Welder of Manhattan, Kan.; children, Katrina Farrell, Kristina Wise and Karina Owens; stepchildren, Netipong (Ned) Ritthisorn, Praipan (Ohm) Ritthisorn, Panthep (Jim) Ritthisorn and Tula (Sam) Ritthisorn; a sister, Barbara Jane Montgomery of Visalia, Calif.; two brothers, William Welder of Palm Bay, Fla., Gerald Welder of Hudson, Ohio; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. JONESBORO, Ill. — Virgie M. Spurlock, 88, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born June 28, 1919, in Hawesville, Ky., daughter of William and Dora Sanders Nix. She and Ervin M. Spurlock were married Dec. 23, 1939, in Jackson. He died Nov. 19, 1988. Spurlock was a member of the United Methodist Church in Anna, Ill., and a volunteer with Homeless Inc. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Stockton of Dongola, Ill., Ramona Clark of Jonesboro; two sons, Roger Spurlock of Cobden, Ill., Dana Spurlock of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Pauline Adkins and Helen Peck of Hawesville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and four grandsons. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Minor officiating. Burial will be in Casper Cemetery. Carmen Dockins, 46, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 30, 1961, in El Paso, Texas, daughter of Earl E. and Malinda A. Tubbs Foster. Dockins was a 1981 graduate of Sikeston High School and had been a medical secretary at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo., and Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Survivors include a son, Matthew Dockins of Hill Air Force Base, Utah; her father of Scott City; her mother and stepfather, Malinda and Sonny Johnson of Sikeston; a sister, Michelle Fayette of Sikeston; a stepbrother, Bruce Johnson of Sikeston; a stepsister, Tammy Baker of Sikeston; and a granddaughter. A private service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Old Morley Cemetery at Morley, Mo. Blanchard Funeral Home in Sikeston is in charge of arrangements. CHARLESTON, Mo. — Wilbert G. "Will" Manche, 76, of Charleston died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 2, 1932, in Perry County, son of Carlos Manche and Irma Dippold Manche DePauw. He and Glenda McDonald May were married April 16, 1988. Manche lived in Perry County most of his life where he was employed with Sabreliner Corp. He was elected as vice president and business representative of Teamsters Local 574 in Cape Girardeau and worked with the Teamsters several years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps 20 years, obtaining the rank of gunnery sergeant. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He moved to Mississippi County in 1988. He was a member of Charleston Kiwanis Club and attended Charleston First Baptist Church. He practiced as a certified hypnotherapist until ill health forced his retirement. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Patrick Manche of Fredericktown, Mo., Douglas Manche of Potosi, Mo., Carl Manche of Perryville, Mo., Keith May of Cape Girardeau, Jay May of Oran, Mo.; two daughters, Vera Pobst of Oran, Jerra Hutson of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Cletus Manche of Perryville, James DePauw of Marion, Ill.; two sisters, Carol Gremlick of Highland, Ill., Georgia Foster of Perryville; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to service time Thursday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Brewer officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. Military rites will be conducted by the Marine Corps Honor Guard. Alberta K. Maxwell, 89, of Jackson died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Monticello House.
She was born Feb. 21, 1919, in Portageville, Mo., daughter of James L. and Mayme Carson Underwood. She and James Maxwell were married Nov. 12, 1953, in St. Louis. He died Oct. 29, 1984. Maxwell moved from St. Louis to Jackson in 1987 and attended First General Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Morehead of Fenton, Mo.; two sisters, Maxine Thompson of St. Louis, Jane Basinger of Jackson; and a grandson. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and four brothers. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. George Tripp officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery. Milda Scott, 84, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Ghent, Ky., to John and Marrie "Mary" Simpson Johnson. She and William K. Scott were married in 1939. He passed away in 1973. Milda worked for Fannie Farmer Candies in Cincinnati, Ohio, and as a waitress and cashier at the former Kaintukee Grill in Florence, Ky. She had lived with her son and daughter-in-law in Jackson since 1995. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ at Tilsit. Loving survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Sally Scott of Jackson; a granddaughter, Kristy (Josh) Carr of Jackson; and two great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Aaron Carr. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. James United Church of Christ in Tilsit. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the church cemetery, with the Rev. James K. Schultz officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. James United Church of Christ or Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation. Arrangements by McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. WOLF LAKE, Ill. — Roberta June "Bertie" Rendleman, 79, of Wolf Lake died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was born Oct. 27, 1928, at Reynoldsville, Ill., daughter of William Curtis and Dorothy May Randall Forrest.
Rendleman was a member of Wolf Lake United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Brad Rendleman of Jonesboro, Ill.; a sister, Barbara Aldridge of Wolf Lake; a brother, Bill Forrest of Granite City, Ill.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, an infant daughter, two brothers, and a sister. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Bill Littrell and Jim Stamp officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. |
