Andy Miinch, a student at Meadow Heights Elementary School, presented his winning banner design to astronaut Linda Godwin, who planned to take the banner into space on a shuttle mission and then return it to the school. The banner contest came about when Godwin visited the school in 1989 and offered to take something into space. Also pictured were Phil Lewis, Meadow Heights principal, and John and Vickie Miinch. Lawrence McBride ran his combine through a field of corn along Cape Girardeau County Road 318, south of Jackson. Although a late planting that spring made for a later than normal harvest, warm and dry conditions in late October and early November allowed area farmers to get out into the fields to harvest the crops. Cape Girardeau Public Schools announced that Gary Kralemann of Jennings, Missouri, would be the new principal at Jefferson School. Making the announcement was, from left: Vince Raddle, director of elementary education; Jeannette Kralemann; Gary Kralemann, and Dr. Arthur Turner, superintendent of schools.
