After an absence of nearly six months, steam returned to the St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern Railway in May 1987. Gary Bensman, front of locomotive, of Diversified Rail Services of Fort Wayne, Indiana, observed the movement of the steam platens and rods as the engineer John Hall moved the locomotive back and forth. After a day as an attorney at the law offices of Richey, Rice, Spaeth, Heisserer and Summers, Kathy Wolz came home to feed her 6-month-old daughter, Allie, before helping with dinner for the rest of the family. Cape Girardeau Fire Chief Gene Hindman watched as Lt. Brad Golden helped remove the lights, chrome and firefighting equipment from Fire Engine 13 in preparation for a new coat of paint.
