Notre Dame 85 years

This undated photograph, possibly from the 1920s, shows St. Mary's High School on the right, looking south on Sprigg Street. St. Mary Cathedral is in the background on the left.

This picture of St. Mary's High School was taken in 1951. Situated on the northwest corner of Sprigg and William streets, the building was formerly Saint Francis Hospital. The school opened its doors on Sept. 1, 1925 with an enrollment of 14 and one teacher; only freshman subjects were taught. The building was constructed in 1878 for the Sisters of St. Francis as a hospital. It served that purpose until 1914 when the Saint Francis Hospital on Good Hope street was built. The high school continued until 1954 when Cape Catholic High School was built.
