Speak Out: Had enough?

While there may be videos with crazier content on the internet, I have thankfully not seen any. Anyone paying the least bit of attention to this sort of ranting and raving, is seriously in need of education.

  • Really Common, what in the video did you find to be inaccurate. Current leadership with their arrogance of power may experience one of the shortest runs in the history of our country. Time will tell.

  • My most modern, cutting edge service provider says I can't watch video without the latest technology to which my machine says no can do. Any ideas short of repacing the laptop?

  • Old John,

I think I remember you saying your computer had a little age on it. If what I remember is correct, you are probably going to have to bite the bullet and open up your wallet.

    -- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Tue, Jan 26, 2010, at 10:28 PM
  • How much memory does your computer have now? How much memory can be added for the maximum possible? Upgrading the memory may be your problem. Or it may be necessary to get a new machine. Then again you may have acquired along the way some unwanted viruses, malware, bugs, etc.

Wheels, Spank or Wiff can give much better advice that I'm able to.

  • Voyager, Plenty of memory and all that stuff. Problem is windows 98 wont take upgrades. It might be easier to get a netbook than trying to upgrade this one. I quit using this one years ago replacing three times to keep up with what was recommended. The replacements all failed due to rough handling.

Wiffle, I should not have diverted from your subject. Your stuff is always good.

-- Posted by Old John on Tue, Jan 26, 2010, at 11:27 PM
  • Old John,

I thought I remembered you mentioning Windows 98 awhile back. I doubt that your computer is upgradeable, because of memory capability and processor speed etc.

With the cost as low as it is these days you would be better off to catch a sale and buy a new one in my opinion.

But even with a new one, you could still be limited by what is reasonably available in the way of internet service in your area. If DSL or Cable service is available no problem.

  • Don't even bother to lok at the video, it is total nonsense. You asked about inaccuracies, here are just a few.

I voted for change, and this is some of what needed changing: The past 8 years were a factor in the "generalized anger and frustration" of voters, because the previous administration capitalized on the lack on bipartisanship, inherited and lost a budget surplus, spent over a trillion dollars on a needless war, failed to create jobs despite gross tax cuts for the wealthiest, managed to virtually destroy America's reputation as a force for good in the world, engendered breeding grounds for future terrorists by unnecessary torture and abuse of Moslem captives, deregulated much of the financial sector leading to current crises, and created a "war on terror" almost entirely for political gain by attempting to frighten Americans into giving up freedoms.

Balance needed to be restored. There is national disgust with the arrogance of one-party rule and for 8 years it was republican. When the minority party abdicates their responsibilities and refuses to take part in meaningful compromises, "one-party" rule may result. It would appear that the Republican Party is so paranoid about cooperating, and thereby giving President Obama's administration credit for making improvements, that they willingly deny Americans any meaningful benefits.

The video complained about taxes and the economy. Of course there are taxes, any implication that the republic party will eliminate them is wishful thinking. The last round of tax cuts increased the deficit and did nothing to stimulate the economy.

There were typical complaints and accusations of the horrors of socialism and the dreaded "government takeovers." Simply stating that you are against "socialized" anything makes very little sense and I would suggest that few people really are "hostile to" government operated activities. For example, the US Military uses "socialized medicine" exclusively and no one that I know of (except Blackwater) objects to a government run military. I hear few complaints from law-abiding people about government run police protection. I have heard no protests over government run fire protection, or government run highway construction or government run air traffic control, or government run courts, (although the Supreme Court seems to have run amuck lately.)

The video contained references to supposedly how little Americans want improved health care.Charles Krauthammer (who appears to follow the Limbaugh school of logic) claims proudly that almost 80% of Scott Brown voters in Massachusetts were opposed to the Congressional Health Care Bill (which is no different than the state program he had supported before.) If 78% of Brown voters are against healthcare and he won just over 50% of the vote, and the voter turnout was about 40%, this means that only about 16% of Massachusetts voters are in favor of stopping health care improvements.

There were also the standard fear-mongering about the government falling to the "radical leftists." The video conveniently forgets that over 90% of the government is no differently than what President Bush administered.

Finally there was the complaining about Washington backroom deals and payoffs, as if this was something entirely new to the capital. Had the republic party been willing to engage in bi-partisan negotiations, perhaps things could have been different. As mentioned before the minority party was so consumed with preventing President Obama from earning credit for anything, the neglected the best interests of the American people, even when they could have participated had they so desired. To paraphrase Golda Meir, the political climate in Washington will improve when the parties (and at this time it's the republicans most to blame) love American citizens more than they hate each other.

  • "Lok" was obviously meant to be "look."

  • Common,

Lots of finger pointing back at those evil Republicans, who incidently have been out of power for over a year now. And I might remind you the Republicans did not control the situation for 8 years. The Congress was controlled by the Democrats for Bush's last two years. And the Republicans never had a bullet proof Super Majority ever.

You voted for change... America voted for change, and they have been shortchanged. American was angry when they voted Obama in, and they are now more angry than before because they were lied to.

No Common, the blame lies firmly on Obama and his Super Majority. Try reading the link below. Not a right wing blog, the article appeared in the Liberal USA Today.

I am not defending the Republicans and their shortcomings, but do place Obama's shortcomings squarely on his own shoulders. And why as you mentioned, does he continue to follow the Bush "doctrine" at an accelerated pace.

You said "The video conveniently forgets that over 90% of the government is no differently than what President Bush administered." Did he not promise change?

    From USA Today:

The Gallup Poll people delivered an interesting report today: President Obama was the most polarizing first-year president in history.

  • No more taxes. No more spending. No more big "S" socialism.

That's why I am going to vote Republican in 2010!

We don't need anymore of the Democrats bank bailouts and TARP! The greatest healthcare system in the known universe cannot sustain another Socialist blow like Medicare Part D.

**** this! I'm gonna go rent Rambo and smear peanut butter all over my belly. AMERICA RISING! AMERICA RISING! AMERICA RISING!

  • Common,

First of all there was no surplus to be inherited, there was a projection that if the tech bubble, housing bubble, et al kept increasing at their 2000 rate there would be a surplus in about 10 years. Just because for 1 year the government didn't spend more than they collected doesn't mean there is a surplus when there was about $3 Trillion of publicly held debt.

Secondly, there were no tax cuts for the wealthy, implying "only", that were not also seen by everyone else who pays taxes. You are seriously confused if you believe that only the wealthy benefit from a capital gains tax reduction or an income tax reduction.

Third, stimulation of the economy does not have to mean a positive growth rate, as in greater than zero. A positive offset to a negative modifier IS stimulation of the economy. Amazing how liberals are supposed to be so much better educated than conservatives yet fail to understand rudimentary mathematics.

Fourth, the Republicans were willing to engage in bi-partisan negotiations, if by bi-partisan you mean the 2 major parties involved and by negotiations you mean looking at the multitude of reasons for increased health care costs, identifying viable solutions, and compromising on which solutions should actually make it into the final draft. However, the truth is that the Democrats decided that the problem was insurance companies make to much profit, which is strange since their combined net profit margins for 2009 was about 3.3% vs about 7.5% for the top 500, instead of realizing the plethora of issues that actually contribute to the problem and addressing those. Yes, telling doctors, nurses, and all other manner of health care professionals how much they can earn, charge, or otherwise recompense is socialism and socialistic practices are not needed or even wanted in many of the aspects of our lives.

Don't be too disheartened though, I agree wholeheartedly with your assertions regarding the use of our military, torture, I have read Saint Augustine's The City of God, and the spending spree our government has been on. As of today, there has been no "perfect" party which has addressed every concern of every American in a satisfactory way. There frankly never will be because of the nature of a centralized democracy government that seeks to encompass a majority. There are downfalls from this approach because the rights of some minorities will be trampled in an effort to attain consensus among the majority. This our founding fathers apparently understood and why they delegated so much to the individual states. Each could thereby make laws more applicable to their social makeup, and minority populations would find it easier to shift between different locals to better suit their needs. Thus the inherent problem is one of a federal government that has created its own problems because it has reached too far in its efforts to obtain power for its members and sadly will find out the inescapable result in the not too distant future.

  • Why don't we start Obama's proposed spending freeze with something like a wage reduction for Congress. Oh, we can't do that or they would leave for higher paying jobs just like the 3 Cape County employees. Local politics is as big of a joke as the national politics.
