  • Excellent article swamp. A bunch of interesting facts on these cities. A couple of comments that caught my attention:

"What do most of these ailing cities all have in common? Well, consider that the vast majority are located in states with forced unions, non-right-to-work states.

"Right-to-work laws attract people and businesses," says labor economist Richard Vedder of Ohio University. "Non-right-to-work states repel them." His statistics show that cities in states with right-to-work laws have sturdier tax bases and higher employment levels.

Unions control state legislatures and city halls in non-right-to-work states, so it can become politically paralyzing to try to fix the problem of runaway labor costs.

Another common trait of financially troubled cities: years and years of liberal governance."

  • Out of these 20 cities and counties 18 of them are strong democratic controlled and 2 are republican controlled districts. Socialism does not work when are some of these people going to wake up to that.

  • "These cities have amassed $118 billion in unfunded healthcare liabilities."

Just wait until everyone gets to pay the Obamacare premiums. It will finish them and many more off so Common and Spaniard can have their so called cheap healthcare.

  • If Obama would leave Air Force 1 parked for a week or so he could pay the debt off at East Greenbush New York and lower the count to 19.

    Lefty,

Unlike Obama's Syrian interference in another country's business... the two wars you mention were wars approved by the United States Congress.

    Capiche?

  • "And if we didn't have to pay off two Bush wars he could save them all and more."

Fighting wars is a constitutional duty of our government. Paying peoples' layfully-incurred debt is not.

  • left turn yes I do. Socialism is spending some one else's money and when that money runs out the system collapses. Also, socialism is government running everything and is the answer to peoples needs they dictate to you how to run your business and intrude on your personal liberties. An example is the old USSR look what happen there and that country was all socialism. Now, left turn if that is something you want to be part of then so be it but don't shove it down other peoples throats that don't want anything to do with far left liberalism. How is that Mr. Liberal

  • The total cost of the two wars is put at $1,462,660,075,934.

The public debt now stands at $11,951,614,681,840.55 (Intergovernmental borrowing adds another $4,786,922,916,353.66)

On the day that Mr. Bush left office, the public debt stood at $6,307,084,792,840.85, with another $4,317,968,751,468.94 in intergovernmental borrowing. Most of the appropriations for the war occurred on or before Mr. Bush left office, and thus the bulk of that $1.4 trillion war cost was already accounted for in the debt when Mr. Bush left office. Thus, the wars only account for about $400 billion of Mr. Obama's $5.64 trillion in new public debt. Curiously, that $400 billion roughly matches Mr. Obama's increase in intergovernmental borrowing, so it can be said that none of the war costs since January 2009 have added to the public debt.
