I don't believe the Mayan, Aztec or Roman cultures received the 'good fortune of their future' they were seeking. All of them were powerful forces but all of them disappeared. Unless you count the Catholic Church as 'Roman'.
I did see a 'Mayan'(self purported descendent) at Sundance. He brought uncle Leonard a 'gift' for the ceremony.
Nothing 'good' ever came from doing human sacrifices.
