Speak Out: Sen Durbin smokeless tobacco ban

Posted by swampeastmissouri on Wed, Oct 19, 2011, at 5:33 AM:

Sen Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois has sent a letter to the Major Leauge Players Association asking them to ban all smokeless tobacco in the dugouts during games. What business does the Senator have telling an american sport what they should do and not do. What Sen Durbin needs to do is his job that he has been elected to do and stay out of the business of dictating policy to Major Leauge Baseball. One good thing Sen Durbin could do is work hard in the Senate and figure out how we can get out of this mess were in.

  • Theorist: The every day person that smokes or uses smokeless tobacco know the dangers they are taking. They do not need the government to tell them that. People are sick and tired of this constant everyday "government is the answer to all of our problems" theory. People want control of their own lives and they make there own decisions on the health risk they take. Like the proposed smoking ban that was turned down by the Cape voters back a few months ago, people sent a message let us make our own decisions about this smoking issue. Next the government will be banning all of the beer and liquor along with the advertising.

  • "Wow! Sounds like a good cause to fight for...think of all the money he'd be saving from health care to individuals. Then look at the examples these baseball heroes are setting...I don't know...Maybe you should find another cause to complain about...just sayin'"

Less than 2 *tenths* of 1% of smokeless tobacco users get cancer or about .002.

The HPV16 virus is designated as the cause of 63% of oral cancers unrelated to tobacco usage. What should we ban to prevent that?

Alcohol, including mouthwash, is also a leading cause of oral cancer.

If your heroes are athletes then maybe you need to switch. Me and mine don't have any "heroes" with the exception of people who risk or lose their lives for others - no politician, no athlete, no hollywood star, musician or a kid who calls 911 is on our hero list.

Frankly, IMO, your nanny-state approach in all-things-government is disturbing.

  • "A government that takes control of the economy for the good fo the people will end up taking control of the people for the good of the economy." - Bob Dole -

That's what we get for letting the government start picking up the tab for health care - they're not trying to find ways to trim the cost.

The American People like their vices, and they should have the freedom to enjoy them, as long as they understand the consequences. That is what freedom is about.

"I want to climb a wall that's tall, and if I fall, I fall, that's all." - Deanna Durbin - "It's foolish but it's fun."

The busybodies don't want us to have fun, because they might have to pay the cost for someone else's foolishness.

Driving drunk threatens others on and off the road. Smokeless tobacco threatens only the user. Surely you can see the difference.

  • Gee...with the attitude on here, why not let everyone just go out and drive drunk as well.

    Theorist,

Honestly, you cannot see the difference in someone chewing tobacco and possibly harming himself vs. a drunk going out and taking innocent people with him when he kills himself with an automobile? You do teach children.... right?

  • Shapley, obviously types better than I do, as well as faster it appears. But our thinking was similar. ;-)

  • Theorist,

Swamp did not bring up a smoking ban... your reading comprehension suffers as I have said before. And your comparison was ridiculous. And I proved no point of yours. I do not want to be connected with snything that even suggests such a silly comparison.

    -- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Wed, Oct 19, 2011, at 9:43 AM
  • Well if what you said is true, he has all the right in the world to send a letter asking them to stop.

Who the heck are you to dictate who somebody can write a letter to?

Is it your job to monitor everybody's mail?

Jeez. Now if it is legislation he is introducing, its a different ballgame.

  • Well Theorist, it was the tobacco chewing that we were discussing and even if you go back to the post you referred to, it still was not a smoking ban Swamp brought up.... it was a proposed smoking ban. Quite a bit of difference, wouldn't you think. A ban requires something of me, a proposal is nothing more than a suggestion at that point. Reading comprehension again.

I think when you made the silly comparison.... you were not thinking.

  • Theorist, I was wondering if you would try to correct the "s" I hit instead of the "a".

Don't go getting your panties all in a wad the next time I lay one on you and your less than perfect use of the English language.... ya heah!

  • "Dug...you never cheered for a sports team, or athlete. I think your life is missing something."

-- Posted by Theorist on Wed, Oct 19, 2011, at 9:19 AM

I have coached more teams and cheered more athletes than you can imagine. Not a one of them is a hero - professional or amateur. Seriously, can you name me one single athlete that deserves "hero" status using your definition? Again, your standards for "hero" are quite low. That is actually a liberal tactic. To raise everyone to hero status. You see it all the time in the newspapers. It goes along with the socialist model that no one stands above the crowd, there is no right or wrong, and social justice.

I put my definition above and won't repeat it.

I guess if you feel Dick Durbin's job is to put his opinion on what private people should do then you have a different opinion of congress than I do. I think it's no more his business than celebrities, athletes, and other politicians doing the same thing. He wasn't elected to tell us how to live our lives by suggesting a *private* organization ban something. He needs to focus on his real job - legislating, not pontificating on bans in the private arena. He is, after all, pushing a ban on others. Not just writing a letter to grandma.

Isn't this the same Dick Durbin that disgraced our heros (serving in the military) by referring to them as Nazis, Soviet gulag and Pol Pot? He's a liberal, elitist, clown. A disgrace. I think he cried on TV a couple of days later.

  • And a new story out today says that a bipartisan bill was introduced to stop the USDA from restricting the use of potatoes in school lunches allowing schools to return to using them AS THEY SEE FIT.

Apparently it will pass. Sorry libs.

  • Maybe they should turn that letter over to Rush Limbaugh and let him auction it off for charity as he did the Harry Reid and the Democratic Congress's letter.

  • "Maybe you should lay off the alcohol mouthwash, Dug."

-- Posted by Theorist on Wed, Oct 19, 2011, at 9:23 AM

Thing is I don't use tobacco of any kind. But I don't deny individuals the right to use it. Isn't that cool Theorist? I don't want to impose my will on others so I feel better when I go to bed at night.

Do you think you're a "hero" because you support a ban on smokeless tobacco?

  • Hello, Theo? You there?

If you're going to ask people to respond to your questions you might expect to answer some yourself. I think there are a few above.
