Speak Out: Answer to Sower questions...

I've read many comments in which people have asked whether Tommy Sowers would follow Nancy Pelosi or be a rubber stamp for Barack Obama if elected. The answer to both of these questions is no and Douglas Williams provides the proof in his 'My Progressive Life' blog.

Quoting Williams:

"Tommy Sowers is a Democrat (barely) who is running to defeat U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) in Missouri's 8th Congressional District. This district takes in the southeastern and south central portions of Missouri and is reliably Republican. The area has not been represented by a Democrat in well over thirty years, and Sowers is not likely to be the one who breaks that trend. However, he has been able to raise a lot of money from donors who mostly reside outside of Missouri due to his youth and his background as a Gulf War veteran. Hopefully, that gravy train will end.

U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), on the other hand, is a COMMITTEE CHAIR in Congress who heads the House Armed Services Committee. He voted against health care reform in the House and, according to his spokesperson, voted Yes on Proposition C. His district, Missouri's 4th, takes in the central and western parts of the state, and Skelton has held on to power in his district by cutting a fairly conservative figure. A Democrat has not broken 40 percent of the vote in a Presidential election in this region since 2000.

Both of these people should lose this year. It is pretty bad when a candidate from our party feels like they have to pander to the far-right in order to get votes. However, it is another thing entirely when someone that holds a position of leadership in a Democratic Congress votes against the biggest piece of legislation that has passed through the U.S. Congress in well over forty years. But on top of that, to then turn around and support a ballot initiative that is a direct shot across the bow at a President from your party is galling, to say the least.

I urge people across the country to cease donations to Rep. Skelton and Tommy Sowers, and I urge Democrats in Missouri's 4th and 8th Congressional Districts to skip over their Congressional races on the ballot this year. Send a message to the leaders of the Democratic Party that the voters that make up the foundation of our party will no longer be taken for fools"

So there you have it. A progressive accusing Sowers of being too conservative...and for the record...Sowers voted for Proposition C as well.

  • Just because a candidate declares themselves a Democrat doesn't mean they follow every democratic ideology. What we really need in Congress are people who are willing to break from their party's views when they believe it right to do so, not succumb to their party's pressure.

  • Tommy is the dude with the gun on TV. And what we have right now is a representative who is rubber stamping the worst ideas of both parties, and somehow getting away with it. Emerson is everything you wouldn't want in a moderate: someone who's too afraid to stand up to either party when they get out of control.

If Tommy doesn't vote in favor of the interests of our district, we could very easily send somebody else in two years.
