I never thought 86 degrees would feel so cold
With a high temperature of only 86°F forecasted for today, we can declare our epic heat wave over. That doesn't mean we won't see more ridiculously hot weather this summer -- we still have most of July and all of August to get through.
Cape Girardeau had high temperatures at least 100°F during nine out of ten days. To put that in perspective, we've only had four triple-digit highs during the last four years combined (1 time in 2011, three times in 2010, and none in 2009 and 2008).
Here's a recap of the high temperatures:
June 28 - 103°F
June 29 - 107°F
June 30 - 105°F
July 1 - 103°F
July 2 - 101°F
July 3 - 92°F
July 4 - 103°F
July 5 - 106°F
July 6 - 106°F
July 7 - 104°F
Naturally, we shattered record highs during several of these days.
Meanwhile, the scattered thunderstorms have brought some welcome relief, but the rains have been hit or miss. The atmosphere just doesn't seem capable of delivering a widespread soaker. More chances of rain are coming this week, with the Cape Girardeau area projected to see around an inch of rain during the next 5 days, with the Bootheel getting 2+ inches.
These are just averages, however: Some places will see squat, while other lucky places will see several inches.
