Here comes the merry-go-round
I'm still stunned. Not only did we actually get some snow from Winter Storm "Fleetwood Mac", but the forecast from the National Weather Service for 3 inches at Cape Girardeau was absolutely perfect. It might be time to issue an Airborne Porcine Alert for the possibility of flying pigs.
For the first time, Southeast Missouri isn't stuck in the middle of a hole with snow everywhere else.
After last night's low of -2°F, it's safe to say that Old Man Winter is firmly in control. Temperatures are not expected to get much above freezing until Wednesday, so this snow is going to be around awhile.
In fact, the snow might get a bit deeper. Several weak clipper systems will be dropping out of the northwest over the next week, bringing chances of snow every day or two. The forecast for Cape mentions the "S" word several times:
Tonight: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 18. Calm wind becoming south southeast around 6 mph.
Saturday: Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 30. South wind at 5 mph becoming north northwest.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Light and variable wind.
Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. East wind between 3 and 5 mph.
Sunday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 24. East northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
Monday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. East wind at 5 mph becoming west.
Monday Night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Northwest wind around 5 mph.
Tuesday: A slight chance of snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 32. North northwest wind between 5 and 8 mph.
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. Northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 35. Southwest wind between 3 and 7 mph.
Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. South southwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming northwest.
Thursday: A slight chance of rain and snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 36. West northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph.
The computer models are struggling to predict the strength and timing of each storm along the merry-go-round, but we could see a dusting -- or even an inch or two -- from the stronger storms. The Sunday night system (perhaps Winter Storm "Guns & Roses") looks the most promising.
The St. Louis area is in line for several more inches during the coming week, but it appears the clipper systems will weaken before they reach this far south. That's certainly been the pattern all season so far, and I don't see why that wouldn't continue.
