We should declare Feb. 3 as "Dartboard Day"
It's time to replace Groundhog Day with a more modern weather-forecasting holiday. The whole concept is ridiculous: A large crowd gathers at some random Pennsylvania town to catch a glimpse of a guy wearing a funny hat hold up a bewildered varmint. How exactly is this supposed to predict the weather?
I proposed that we substitute a new tradition: Dartboard Day on Feb. 3. We'll select some random guy to throw a dart. If it lands in the upper half of the dartboard, we're going to get six more weeks of winter. If it lands in the lower half, we're going to get six more weeks of winter. It's a prediction that is far more scientific and reliable than any shadow cast by a groundhog or marmot.
Speaking of "six more weeks of winter", don't expect today's nice snow-melting sunshine to last long. Two more winter storms are already poised to bring a chance of the white stuff.
The first system, tentatively dubbed Winter Storm "Comic Book Guy", will bring widespread rain on Thursday, followed by a possible change to snow on Friday. These rain-changing-to-snow scenarios are often a disappointment, but the computer models are suggesting we could pick up an inch of snow accumulation, with isolated areas seeing 3 inches.
Next week's storm, which might become Winter Storm "Disco Stu", could also bring a chance of snow. As usual, the computer models are all over the place. Right now the system appears to be on the weak side, but anything can happen.
