Moderate Risk of Severe Storms today; tornadoes looking more likely
We've been upgraded to a Moderate Risk for severe thunderstorms today and tonight. Large hail, high winds, and tornadoes are all possible, especially overnight.
Of particular concern is the growing risk of tornadoes. The latest discussion from the Storm Prediction Center mentions the potential for "nocturnal significant tornadoes". Basically this means that strong tornadoes (EF2 or greater) could move through after dark, and that's never a good thing. Cape Girardeau is right in the middle of the axis of greatest risk.
We have a 15% chance of seeing a tornado within 25 miles of a point. And we have a 10% chance of seeing a significant (EF2+) tornado within 25 miles of a point.
The probabilities for high winds and large hail aren't real pretty either.
At the time of this writing (noon), the regional radar isn't showing any storm development. But that could change in a hurry at any time this afternoon and overnight.
