Cold - definitely, snow - maybe
The online world has been abuzz for several days about the computer models showing snowfall this weekend. Longer range models have a tendency to break your heart, though, since they are notorious for flip-flopping.
At this point, we can be confident -- thanks to a strong cold front arriving today -- that the weather will be very cold by November standards. Low temperatures for the next several nights are expected to drop into the 20s (perhaps even the teens Thursday night). The only saving grace is that we should climb above freezing each afternoon.
With lows well below freezing, we can entertain the possibility of snow or winter mix. The official National Weather Service forecast has small chances for precipitation this weekend:
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW. LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S.
SUNDAY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW POSSIBLY MIXED WITH RAIN. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 30S.
However, moisture will be limited. The 7-day map for precipitation doesn't paint much for us:
No matter what happens this weekend, the next big question is whether this cold wave is just a November fluke, or the harbinger of a long, cold winter. We'll find out soon enough.
