Tornado Watch for today, then heavy rain in the coming days
We're under a Tornado Watch through 8 PM this evening as thunderstorms continue to build in from the north.
High winds and large hail are the greatest threat. The technical discussion for the Tornado Watch states:
VERY UNSTABLE AIRMASS EXPECTED TO FUEL INTENSE TSTM DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS ALONG AND AHEAD OF A FRONT SETTLING GRADUALLY SOUTH TO THE OH RIVER. INITIAL ACTIVITY MAY BE DISCRETE AND SUPERCELLULAR IN NATURE WITH A GOOD CHANCE FOR LARGE HAIL AND PERHAPS A COUPLE OF TORNADOES. WITH INCREASING STORM COVERAGE WILL COME THE CHANCE FOR CELL MERGERS AND UPSCALE GROWTH...WITH THE EVENTUAL EVOLUTION INTO A FORWARD PROPAGATING MCS ACROSS SRN-SCNTRL KY BY EVENING.
The "forward propagating MCS", or Mesoscale Convective System, is big blob of ugliness.
Thursday and Friday could also bring severe storms. We're right at the edge of the Slight Risk zone for tomorrow, and just outside of the zone on Friday.
Perhaps more ominous are the rainfall projections. With chances of thunderstorms for the next 7 days, we could see some serious rainfall accumulation. The current 7-day projection paints a large swath of heavy rain over the Midwest, with 10+ inch totals possible to our west, and 3-5 inch totals over Southeast Missouri.
