"This is a very low confidence forecast"
That's not a very comforting phrase to hear from the forecasters at the National Weather Service in Paducah, but that's what they wrote in this morning's forecast discussion.
Hopefully we'll be able to avoid freezing rain, and just see liquid rain, wet snow, or some combination. But anything can happen.
Tonight's forecast for Cape Girardeau calls for "snow accumulation up to 3 inches." The key phrase is "up to." We may not see anywhere near that much, or we could get a blizzard.
The computer models put Cape right on the line between heavy snow and just rain. For example, the GFS paints 1-2 inches of accumulation for Cape, but 3-4 for the northwest corner of Cape County, and 5+ inch totals to the northwest.
The NAM, however, projects very little snow accumulation for anywhere in the county.
That's why this is a low confidence forecast.
