Summer is finally here
It's a cruel joke: local schools have already started, but now the hot weather is finally arriving. Yesterday was the only day that we've hit 90°F so far in August!
Thanks to a dome of high pressure that will be settling over our area, we should see several 90-degree days over the next week. Combined with high humidity, we might actually see the heat index hit triple digits.
So far, this summer has been drastically cooler then last year:
2012 | 2013 thru Aug. 22 | |
---|---|---|
Days at or above 90°F | 78 | 23 |
Days at or above 95°F | 34 | 5 |
Days at or above 100°F | 12 | 0 |
Even with the impending heat wave, it's very unlikely we will hit 100°F this year. We might hit 95°F next week, although the current forecast shows highs at Cape Girardeau only topping 93°F next Wednesday and Thursday.
We're lucky that the recent monsoon has kept Southeast Missouri out of the drought area. Northern Missouri and Southern Arkansas have not been so fortunate:
The long-range forecast is hinting at above-average precipitation over the Midwest for September through November. Maybe.
