No foolin': Snow possible on April Fools Day
Winter will continue into April courtesy of another cold front arriving on Monday. After a brief warmup on Easter Sunday into the 60s, the temperature is expected to plunge again, dropping to around freezing Monday might. That will be enough to change any rain Monday afternoon into snow Monday night.
In this morning's forecast discussion, the forecasters at the National Weather Service in Paducah advise that "a light dusting of snow may be possible late Monday night."
One of the computer models actually goes beyond a dusting, painting two inches for Cape Girardeau County, with more to the northwest.
However, the models also predicted accumulating snows for the last two systems -- and those failed to deliver here. So I'm going to remain skeptical.
As we get closer, the forecast will likely change. Based on the previous winter storms this season, here's a handy guide to interpreting the official forecasts:
If the forecast calls for... | We will actually get... |
---|---|
Dusting | Squat |
1-3 inches | Dusting |
2-4 inches | Dusting |
4-6 inches | 1 inch |
6-10 inches | 3 inches |
10-14 inches | 4 inches |
12-18 inches | Ice storm |
Regardless of the snow forecast, we can be fairly confident that it will stay unseasonably cold for the first part of April. The 8-14 day forecast continues to lean toward below-average temperatures:
I don't want to hear any complaining, though. We'll have plenty of opportunities to complain this summer when we suffer through a heat wave with triple-digit temperatures. You know it's coming.
