Welcome to spring... NOT
The calendar might show that spring officially arrives this week, but don't tell that to the National Weather Service. They've just issued a Winter Storm Watch for Stoddard, New Madrid, Butler, Wayne, Ripley, and Carter counties in Southeast Missouri.
Those areas could see a surprise 3-6 inches of snow Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Cape Girardeau is not within the watch area, but that doesn't mean that we're going to remain snow-free. The latest run of the NAM computer model actually paints 3-6 inches of snow right over Cape County, with 8+ inches just to the west:
Keep in mind that the NAM is a frustrating model that can swing between "Epic Snowstorm" and "Nothing But Sunshine" at the drop of a hat. The somewhat more steady GFS model keeps the major snow well to the south and west, but it's been creeping our direction with each run:
The HPC probability maps, which take into account several computer models, are currently showing that we have a 50% chance of receiving at least 1 inch:
...And we have a 10% chance of seeing at least 4 inches.
With temperatures dropping into the low 20s Wednesday night and again falling into the 20s Thursday night, the ground will be cold enough to support snow accumulation. That's quite a change from our high of 74 last Friday.
